We have been running an in tank Ford Taurus fuel pump for the last year, worked out alright, till we ran out of fuel one too many times and lost significant fuel pressure after refueling...I got to drive the car for the first time in the 2 years on the team, absolutely amazing!!! What can be done to prevent this problem or what other pumps work out better, we try to run a small tank for reduced weight just enough to get us by for endurance.

We switched to a Walbro external pump this year and it is really a nice pump. We haven't had any problems with the pump itself, but we did initially get a defective Walbro fuel pickup. The Walbro pickups are cool because they seal off when they pump air, but you have to be very careful about placement and tank design to make them work for you.

We use what amounts to a late 80's ford Ranger (external) pump form autozone. The only problem we've ever had was when some guys in the past made a tank that was WAY too close to the exhaust, and the pump diesd a few times from pumping fuel that was basically boiling. That and a pump died that ran dry.

The best part? Lifetime free replacement!

Just a hint: Look in the "For Sale" section of this forum or just click this link (http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/412600868/m/72710490521).

Master Part Number: E2000 From a 1987 Ford Ranger...the external 12V pump.

Lots of posts about this awhile back

everyone else pretty much covered it. external pumps are much easier to work with than internal ones... unfortunately most of them flow several times what any fsae car will ever need... but thats what the fuel regulator is for. basically start searching oem parts... lots of fuel injected ford and gm cars from the 80's used external pumps.

Mike, you forgot to mention the issue of breaking and resealing the fuel cell gasket everytime we have an issue with the pump, which we had to do almost immediatly after putting the thing together because we forgot to give the pump power. Is it just me or does the hard-setting gasket maker smell like beef jerkey?

we use the in-tank f4i pump (which, conveniently, flows just what we need for our f4i fuel rail and motor), and a fuel cell cap from jeg's bolted to the side of the tank. 2 years, no leaks (from the cap...the welds are another issue)
