Hi all,

So our roll hoop rear supports go down to the subframe at an angle which is touching against the harness bar. Is it legal to spot weld the two together?

As far as I know, as long as the harness bar and braces are the proper thicknesses, there's nothing to stop you from tying them together.
Keep in mind though that your rear braces have to be minimum 30 degrees from the main hoop. So I imagine your harness bar will have to be pretty far behind the roll hoop in order to tie into the braces. Depends on your design though.

I think this is specifically forbidden by:
B5.4.1 The shoulder harness must be mounted behind the driver to structure that meets the requirements of B3.3.1. However, it cannot be mounted to the Main Roll Hoop Bracing or attendant structure without additional bracing to prevent loads being transferred into the Main Hoop Bracing.

For years we have put tubes between the main roll hoop and the main roll hoop bracing, and then put the harness tube on those tubes very near the bracing tubes.

Will-
I completely forgot about that rule. That is a good point.

I guess you could theoretically brace the harness bar in such a way that the loads are fed back into the main roll hoop or upper side impact structure, although I imagine the solution would be heavy and difficult to justify.

I believe that a set up like below would work.
