Hey guys, ive been reading the 2012 rules and i have some doubts about it, its about engines.

See my born language isnt english so im having a little bit of a trouble with technical readings, and google translator isnt doing a great job, i wanted to know if in any competition the engine can be changed for another one of the same type, model etc? what are the cases?

If i read well and i quote

Once the vehicle is approved to compete in the dynamic events, the ONLY modifications permitted to
the vehicle are those listed below. They are also referenced in Part C of the Formula SAE Rules –
Static Event Regulations.
a. Adjustment of belts, chains and clutches
b. Adjustment of brake bias
c. Adjustment of the driver restraint system, head restraint, seat and pedal assembly
d. Substitution of the head restraint or seat insert for different drivers
e. Adjustment to engine operating parameters, e.g. FUEL MIXTURE AND IGNITION TIMING

I know it seems dumb but there are rules that goes like this:

B8.1.3 If more than one engine is used, the total displacement cannot exceed 610 cc and the air for all
engines must pass through a single air intake restrictor (see B.8.6, “Intake System Restrictor.”)

It means that the car may have more than one engine right? and the total displacement its no more that 610cc, am i right with these? so, we take only one engine to michigan??

Thanks

As I read it, as long as the thing stays functionally the same then it is fine. So if your engine blow up, you could switch it out with an engine exactly the same. If you were to which an engine out with another engine, then at a minimum you would need to re-tech in.

We take a spare engine to competiton of the same specification as the one in the car, in case of a failure. If our original engine blew up, we would not complete that dynamic event, and try to replace the engine with our spare, so the car may run in the rest of the events.

The displacement restrictions (B8.1.3) are meant to multiple engines that are on the car at the same time, like if you had one eingine that powered the right wheel and another that powered the left wheel.

I get it, so one more just in case, the thing is that, we have two engines, one is stock but the other is tuned for racing (some work has been done to the pistons or so) they have to be exact so i can switch them right? What if i take those two, i blow up the racing-tuned and switch it for the stock.

is that legal??

yes as long as displacement is <610 and you didn't do anything else weird.

Just remember you still have to pass noise, so if your new engine is making more noise due to tune, etc, then you need to re-tech.
