Rob,
The man's name was Mark Porter!
For those interested. In the development class of the Aussie V8 taxicab race at Bathurst, Mark Porter was involved in a minor collision that turned him around sideways on the track. His position was perilous as he was just over a blind crest that cars top at over 100mph.
Several cars avoided him, but a Ford Falcon driven by David Clark locked up and hit Porter's Holden Commodore sideways, virtually driver's door to driver's door.
Both drivers were heliported to hospital in critical condition.
David Clark regained consciousness today and his prognosis is good, however, Mark Porter died without regaining consciousness on Sunday night.
We should offer our deep condolences to those he has left behind, including a wife and infant child.
We should also offer our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to David Clark. He will need all the help he can get.
Pictures of the aftermath (no blood) can be seen here for those interested in such stuff. http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleId=20617
Once again Rob, it is disrespectful to refer to people by their surname.

Pat,
Maybe where you are from but up hear it doesnt really matter. Its not like i am going out of my way to call people just by their last name. I am just writing quickly because of lack of time. And let me tell you, after meeting Michael Royce(there you happy?) I dont think he really would care. He is a real down to earth guy and joked constantly with special attention payed drinking. But thanks for your input anyway Clarke. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Lighten up.

Rob,
i don't care what the local customs are in Buffalo NY, the web is a global forum.
Truth is that referring to people by surname only IS disrespectful except where there is a degree of familiarity and it is in a private conversation.

First off deep regards to Mark Porter's family, team, and friends. It's a shame that the accident happened.
Ok, I have a few thoughts on the off-topic conversation here.
1) Rob Woods is synomonous with 'lack of tact' so no suprise he's offended
2) That said clearly there was no offense meant
3) My mother always told me it was improper to call people you don't know by their first name only. Perhaps I should comment on all your posts Mr. Clarke? For they don't meet my standards and this is a world forum
4)In my experience, Aussies are likely the most polite and respectful people I've ever met, and its always a pleasure to be around them... except when they decide their view of respectfulness is the only right one. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nasty shunt for both, http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif condolences and best wishes to the families.
Like it or not Rob, the 'old grumpies' stil rule the world - best play to their apparent 'foibles', as they're usually right in the long run! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I wouldn't be too sure with Michael Royce by the way - as he too is from a neck of the woods where being called by your surname is derogatory - but is too polite to say a word in person.
Granted there's worse things one could do, but if one can avoid striding off the line on completely the wrong foot it always helps! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

first, deep regards and condolences to the family, friends, and team of Mark Porter.
and then to PatClarke,
granted, this is a global forum, there is no need to police every user's actions or words.
the users of this forum come from several different countries and do not necessarily know the etiquette of every other nation or region, nor do they need to. what is required though, if he/she would like to stay a member of the forum and not banned by a moderator, is good intentions and compliance with forum rules.
teenagers will be teenagers, adults will be adults, you can't go around to every stranger on the street and say, pardon me, please do not curse because in my culture/belief it is rude and insulting. there are many conflicting traditions between cultures, but if we are accepting and understanding, all that is necessary is good intentions.
