I'm relatively new to Formula Student and have been given the task of designing a spool diff to save weight over last years car. I basically have no idea where to start so could anyone point me in the right direction? Materials? Sizes? Mountings? etc
Any help would be appreciated

Take a look at this link.

It is a hillclimb car with a 'spool' rear end using some modified gokart parts.

That's a lot of bolts.
I'm sure it's a pleasure to work on.

That's hilarious.
sla55h: Most of those parts are from a go-kart; rotor, hub, bearing carriers, caliper. You could use it all but I'd stay away from the kart caliper.

spool sounds like a good idea for a first year team, all it is is a shaft with a gear and a brake attached to it and some way to get your driveshafts attached.
as far as that link
holy fastners Batman!
