is it possible to use solidworks to design the chassis?

No. It's prohibited due to the interference between Einstein's theory of relativity and electromagnetism. Once we have found the unified theory for both, maybe then...

Good luck!

If you do a search, you will find that solidworks is not even used for 3d modeling, I believe there is a thread where someone was able to design the chassis from a 2d sketcher using a 3 dimensional coorindate system.

Its a good workaround until we solve the link between Einstein's theory of relativity and EM.

Now Miki, thats no help...

you should try this
Engineering Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_(software))

Also very good for "optimizing" your FEA and CFD results!

I mainly use Solidworks for 1-d modeling.

Really now, you are going to try and be HELPFUL?

you guys aren't being very helpful.

Solidworks 06 and onwards can do chassis design.

its under Insert->Feature->Structure->Chassis

Then you choose either spaceframe, monocoque or regular.

Holy crap! Did you know Windows 7 does FEA through paintbrush!?

Can someone send me please the chassis model?

If feel generous send me please the master cad model?

Thankyou Macros!

Main roll hoop is not required for 2009?

Nahh, probably made transparent, not to block that rendered background.

You guys think that whoever started this topic gets the point by now?

We found out a lot of problem using Solidworks parts to generate grid in CD-Adapco Star-CCM+ for CFD analisys.

Simple and fairly for basic mechanical parts but if you are used to work by surfaces it's a mess.
I don't know about chassis designing with SW.

I think that PTC Pro-E and DS Catia are better

No, haven't you heard of www.fsae.com (http://www.fsae.com)'s sister forum, "forum LA?" (www.forumla.com). They mainly cater to west coast teams, and were formed in late 2006 after the first West event. They sponsor a few teams, if I remember right Auckland was one of them.

I agree with exFSAE too, trying to do anything more than 1D modeling in Solidworks is just asking for trouble!

Paint is pretty good for optimizing FEA results, but I personally prefer Gimp (or Photoshop if you're a high roller). It's a little trickier and the learning curve is much steeper, but it is capable of generating much more convincing gradient shading.

ummm we used 2008-09 solidworks to design the whole chassis last year. i can't tell from all the sarcasm if you guys actually use it or not. it came complete with dimensions, angles, etc... looking to create chassis in newest edition if at all possible.

Now worries, we do have some civility around here. Our posts are generally either 100% serious or 100% sarcastic. If you still have any doubts, I suggest sticking with MS Paint. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
