Has anyone ever tried the 10" Hoosier oval track asphalt slicks, as used on microsprint cars?
These tires are available in 6",8" and 10" tread widths and a variety of soft compounds.
I am not involved with a fsae team, but I am embarked on building a light weight, sports-bike powered road race car and figured that the many young, talented open minds frequenting this forum would have an oppinion on these tires.
Thanks for any help,
Jon

From what I remember those tires for the microsprint cars have compounds are harder then the regular R25A compounds that Hoosier makes.

I was informed by Irish Saunders at Hoosier that the LC3 compound is about the same hardness as the R25A and that the LC3 should have a little more traction independent of the durometer.
This information still leaves the LC2 compound in a 10" wide tread and the LC1 and LC0 compounds in a 6" wide tread as possibilities for softer tires to fit 10" diameter rims.

For dirt microsprints Hoosier offers a D10 compound that measures from 10-15 on the durometer vs our hoosier slicks that measure right around 25. Granted that they are treaded and may not be great in the dry, but it could be an interesting thought for rain tires?

I also beleive that these tires would have a tendancy to get to hot for long events like the endurance run (while running on pavement). Just from my experience after running my microsprint at a local atocross.

We purchased a set of the 6" wide LCO tires. Noted to us by a hoosier sales person was the softer compound and less stiff sidewall when compared to the R25A. Holding the tire it's obivious they are less stiff, as well they are 2.0 pounds lighter per tire.

We have yet to test on them, though talking to Brown University they were slow in response and destroyed within a day. Certainly still worth the cost to learn how they perform.

Wish you had 10" wheels? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I asked Jeff Speer from Hoosier about the small oval track tires at one point and he told me its the same carcass as the two ply road race tires (or close enough where the difference was negligible).
