Looks very dangerous and uncomfortable.
Fast is fun but unsafe is stupid....

I feel sorry for your tires.

Looks good, does it feel resonably stable with the motor up that high? How much did it end up weighing?

Is that the fun police? There must be a story.

I'd say you could drop that engine quite a bit.. looks a little dicey!!

Looks fun though. Even if highly dangerous

The only way he's ever going to get that thing to turn in any decent fashion is with that engine weight up high like that. Frankly, with that much stiffness through the middle of the kart, and the solid rear axle, it's going to probably be a losing proposition to get that thing to turn at all!

You may have a fighting chance if the engine doesn't go through you when you get in a front end crash (if whatever it is you hit doesn't take off your legs first). As silly as it sounds, I would recommend a rib vest with a chest plate since you're so rediculously close to that steering wheel.

Good luck man. Keep the rubber side down!

I hope your next thread isn't titled "My bare backside hits the road".

A full set of motorcycle leathers would probably at least give you a fighting chance of survival with that.

Btw, Kirk, who cares about steering response. Isn't that what the pedal on the right is for? Surely when he presses the throttle, it won't be going straight.

You bunch of nacy's! :P I doubt he intended it to be more than a bit of fun, and your no more exposed than a normal kart. I'd strongley suggest a set of kart overalls, but frontal impacts? SuperKarts do 160mph.....

So many na-sayers. I betcha that shit is fun as hell, and he isn't going to take it on the highway with cars. If he doesn't drive it where he needs front end impact protection, he doesn't need front end impact protection. If you all go stand in a field, is it dangerous because you didn't bring a hardhat? You know, something could fall out of the sky.

I'd drive the sh!t out of that thing! Can't be that much more dangerous than any modern crotch rocket.

Golfer, your crazy man, but i'm sure you have more fun than most.

Thats not dangerous... I'm sure the police were just making sure the Heineken keg didn't have beer in it while he was driving on public roads. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I was expecting some negative comments from the FSAE crew due to the fact it's so much more different than your karts. It's not the safest thing in the street but it's no more dangerous than a motorcycle (which the other member said) which is out there with other cars. The Sheriff was cool about it and even asked me some questions about it. I still have some work to protect my feet and a chest protector will be in the budget fo this year. AS far as the weight I am under 300lbs for the lart only.

I am a big fan of that 5L keg fuel tank.

Do you think it is safe enough to be used for Formula SAE? We are currently rigging up our engine assembly and this 5L keg would go very well with the OEM CBR600RR in-tank fuel pump. Also, considering our planned fuel consumption, it seems too perfect.

Even with a pig of an engine, you wont need a full 5L tank for endurance. Also, would you be obligated to add an "E85" sticker if you used that tank? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Take a look at 2007 endurance fuel consumption and you'll see that 18 of 37 teams went over 5L (1.32 gal), including TUG and Wisconsin.

The problem with the tank is that it is very thin and that made it hard for me at least to weld. I forgot the exact thickness but after welding it all up and dealing with it I wouldnt do it again. I took the stock tank and cut out the fuel pump mount and welded it in place. If I had FSAE resources I would have just machined it all.

You could "Oklahoma" it together with some JB Quick.

lol...I was just going to say...

Why not use some Aluminum Chemical Weld? That stuff works wonders; we are using it for our impact attenuator. According to analysis, the chemical weld will be stronger than welding.

anyways, back to the topic at hand:

to the OP, do you have any plans on rigging up a roll bar to that thing? You know, for some extra insurance.

Yeah, but who goes to Detroit?! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I only ever looked at the fuel consumption from West, which was about a quarter gallon lower.
