The car is also full of electronic features, such as electronic clutch and gearshift. Two-way telemetry, video & audio link, semi-active damping. ECU is equipped with launch contro, anti-spin etc. More pictures to come!
Weight is about 200 kg. Engine is a Yamaha R6 with turbo charger.

3 questions:
cost report? yikes.
electronic clutch? do you mean the clutch is actually electronically controlled, via some sort of control system/feedback loop?
heart-rate monitoring via bluetooth? is this really necessary? i don't think we're in a jet fighter.

Hehe, heart-rate monitor via bluetooth, no it's not needed and hasn't been implemented, simply not enough time unfortunatly.
Electronic clutch, yes we have implemented a clutch that is controlled from the steering wheel. It's also used when shifting down gears.
Cost report is actually not that much. Almost all of the electronics have been built by us for good price. I looked at some other teams with quite simple electronics and their stuff was actually about as expensive as ours. We are well below the $25,000 limit.
Things on that list of electronic features that hasn't been implemented is:
-> Bluetooth measurement of wheel temperature and pressure
-> MOST (Media Oriented System Transport)
-> Heart-rate monitoring via Bluetooth
Some other things have been added though, hopefully we'll give out more information and pictures shortly.

Excellent work, it looks great. What kind of actuator do you use on your clutch? Electric motor, solenoid?

to add to denny's q, what do you use for feedback? i've thought about trying this, but i never could come up with a viable variable to tell how much clutch slip there is.

We use an electric motor. The feedback is in form of micro switch at one of the ends (which the clutch can calibrate against on startup) and an optical fork and dish which reads how much the motor has drawn or pushed the clutch.

That kind of shows how the clutch controller is made. I don't know all the technical terms in English so it's a bit tricky to explain, so a picture shows a lot more http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Using a solonoid would be tricky I belive since you would need to constantly have a current on the it. This way you don't need that. With the optic reading you can see how much slip there is and get the electric motor fix that by some kind of control system.

The Quality reminds me on the RIT Cars from 2000 and 2001.
Last years car was also nice, hopefully you have more luck these year!

Very nice car indeed. I see you are not shooting for anyhing in the cost event.
Looks very prone to failure because of all the vital electronic stuff, I hope you guys tested it a lot.

I don't know if I am that worried about the electronics. Not all of the electronics are needed for the car to run. The stuff needed is gearchange, steering wheel and the ECU that controls the engine, that would make the car drive around the track.
Car isn't that expensive, far under the $25,000 limit. Electronics are cheap when you manufacture it yourself and in a high volume.
We are not in the competition to build a gocart, we want to create something spectacular.

Geez guys, you're being a little hard on this team for their electronics. "looks prone to failure... nice work". Pretty backhanded compliment.
Larsmark - That is an excellent looking car you've built. Will it be coming to the US next year? I admire the level of polish you've reached on your brakes/suspension parts. And your carbon fiber work looks amazing, is that a CF fan blade? Also, I noticed there's no engine harness in the studio shots (at least not to the fuel injectors). Are you guys still building, or did you just take it off for those pictures?

When the pictures were taken the car wasn't totally finished and it still isn't. We have some details left to make. The protection between the engine and driver is currently being made out of carbon fibre.
The fan blade isn't made of CF, very cool idea though :-)
It has been fun to make this car, especially since everything has been made at the school (except a few things, like engine etc) by students involved in the project. Nothing has been sent away for a company to make.
I don't know if we will be coming to the US next year. I hope we will but I belive it all depends on how well we do in UK. If we do well I guess that we have a chance of maybe raising money for the trip, but if we don't do well in UK I guess getting cash for the trip can be a huge problem.
