Does anyone have a good source to buy 300m steel from? I'm looking for axle shaft material. I see that Mark Williams sometimes dumps some on EBAY but their pieces are scrap that is too short for me.

Don't use 300M for your axles. Bad idea.

300M is about the best material you can use for axles. Pretty expensive though.

I don't see why it's a bad idea to use. 300M was the only material that was strong enough for the halfshafts on the 2004 UMR car- safety factor of 1. 4000 series steels are cheaper if your minor spline diameter is large enough to make the 4000 series strong enough (which was the limiting factor necessitating the use of 300M).

I've made halfshafts from 300M, 4340 and 4140 (machined and heat treated). None of them were easy to machine a shaft that long, 300M took longer to heat treat, but that was about the only difference in making them.

so... where did you buy the 300m from?

i was under the impression that 300m was ideal for axles because of its high strength and more importantly, its fatigue resistance and ability to cope with stress reversals.

JR,

You need to contact a local metal service center. A search in Thomas Registry should give you a couple companies in your area (search for alloy steel, aircraft steel, etc). Any company that carries alloy steels should have 300M in stock(maybe not the exact size, they usually carry larger diameters in 300M). You might be better off with 4340 AQ (Aircraft Quality) since service centers usually stock that in smaller diameters and is cheaper(and you really don't lose that much over 300M).
