I am trying to drum up interest in pooling a bunch of FSAE teams in the Northeast/East together for the trip out to FSAE West. As an alum of the Dartmouth team, I am trying to do my part to help out. I remember that the last thing we wanted to worry about was arranging transportation for the car and ourselves and then packing everything up and heading out on the road for a trip clear across the country. So I figure that it would be best to contract with someone who can ship the cars and the team gear and then all you have to do is get yourself a cheap flight to the event. Or you can still road trip it on the cheap, but then you don't have to worry about the gas and danger of dragging 5000 pounds of trailer behind you. Besides, you might even be able to get the school to pay for it (above your current budget), since they would be absolved of any liability issues. I think it would be a hell of a relief for the teams and schools, so I went ahead and got in touch with John Deller and he is interested in doing this. He said he would even provide a proper tent/refreshments for the teams that he brings across country.
So the next step is to drum up some interest with the Northeast/Atlantic teams and see if we can make it worth it for him. I've already been in touch with the teams that have registered for the event, but just in case I missed anyone I figured I would post it to the boards as well. After all the more people we get to go, the cheaper it will be for everyone. It will probably be somewhere about $2,000. He would probably take the car about a week or so before comp and then have it back a week or so after comp.
I will probably get several collection points set up for the teams to meet him at and get the car. The primary reason for this is to cut down on cost and minimize the travel time per car. In every case the total round trip distance traveled by the team to one of the collection points will be achieved in a single day (and most likely several hours).
In addition, outside space on the truck will be divided up per team to allow space for sponsor ads. This should alleviate any fears of lost sponsorship dollars for not taking the teams own trailer and on a typical 18 wheeler should allow for plenty of space per team.
