I was thinking about formula 1 transmission and fianl drive gear ratios the other day when I watched the Brazil GP. I can't seem to locate anything on numbers for those as I figured it would be secret anyway. Anybody have a clue on those? Regs online just talk about width and not diameter.

Well, tyre sizes are known as are max rpm and top speeds, so the calculation is trivial for overall required ratio.

Minimum crankshaft height is also in the regs so that'll put an upper bound on 7th gear input gear diameter. But the rest is a free choice by the teams, so who know what solution(s) are in use. PR material and 'spy' shots might help.

I've heard of some IRL teams that used to use F1 gears so if you can get your hands on an IRL gear ratio list that would give you an idea. But without knowing what the bevel and/or drop ratios are you'd still be guessing.

you could do a sound analysis from the onboard shot and work backwards from the known top speed through the speed trap. There was an article on f1technical explaining it

Have you thought about checking out a simulation like rFactor or F1 Challenge in the pit/setup area? You'd think they would be pretty close.

Can you be more specific? Are you interested in the ratio itself or other design aspects?

From the cars I've seen (not F1) the final drive can vary greatly, most transmissions have an additional transfer or drop gear. And the individual gears can vary in ratio a lot, which of course has an effect on final drive ratio.

IRL gearbox has always been a spec part and by all external appearances is a dinosaur compared to a modern F1 gearbox. I can't imagine they share parts, unless X-Trac has sometime in the past built a F1 gearbox for a Minardi or simialr team? Still I seriously doubt it...

I don't know if they've ever manufactured an F1 gearbox (it wouldn't surprise me) but they do manufacture some internal components for F1.
