Does anyone have any experience mounting master cylinders above the drivers feet? We are planning on using a reverse swing pedal assembly so that our master cylinders will be mounted above and behind the drivers feet.

In the rules, the only requirement that I can find for master cylinder location is that they be rearward of the plane defined by the front bulkhead. However, I can see a tech inspector arguing that it must be protected in the event of a rollover also. My feeling is that if you have rolled, what good are brakes. But I can also see that it would be bad for the master cylinders to be forced into the same space as the drivers feet in the event of a rollover.

Anyone have any stories of master cylinders and/or other pedal linkages being above the front bulkhead and passing or not passing tech inspection?

Thanks.

as always, email Kathleen McDonald/FSAE rules committee. You can find the email in any document regarding rules for FSAE/FSAE West.

If we say it is legit, that means nothing come competition. If they say it is, you're fine. You will get a good turn-around, too. Maybe 1-2 business days max.

One of our older cars (2001) had a tandem master cylinder above and behind the pedals. They were able to successfully integrate the mount for the steering rack and the master cylinder on a solid 1/4" plate. The only issue is that the master cylinder had a slight crack so it leaked fluid onto your legs every now and then.

As the rule states, you can't have any crushable objects forward of the front bulkhead. I don't think they really specify about the rest of the front subframe though. To try and answer your question, I would mount the master cylinder within the limits of the roll-line between your bulkhead, front/main hoop. This way if you do actually roll the car, the cylinder won't get crushed by the ground.
