Has anyone ever used a front engine setup for their car in the past? If so, has anyone got pics?

Never heard of it, would be interesting thou! This is Formula SAE, not Nascar SAE, there is also the question if you did a front engine would your car be rear wheel drive, front wheel drive or AWD. also would it be lognitudional and would you mount incorporate axels to the bottom of the tranny like a fwd car?

I belive Michigan Tech had a side engine car in either 2000 or 2001.

Heh, NASCAR SAE. And I thought some of these cars were mobile billboards already!

we wanted to run a front engine car, but we found it easier to just add reverse and drive backwards...http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You had better design/test the carbon kevlar underpants first.

Side mount engine is most likely the fastest layout but is difficult to package and still look elegant. There were Long "discussions" with Rotor re this layout.`(in early 2003)

This looks rather elegant, especially in real life.

It is a bit bigger though than the average FSAE car.

very cool Igor, where have you seen one?
It looks like a Gordon Murray design
Think you have let the cat out of the bag re neutral axis explain.

Honda had one on their stand at the 2000 Detroit Motor Show with lots of people drooling over it.
Apparently the car was sketched by the president of the Honda corporation during a boring meeting. He then had his engineers develop it so he could play around with it on their own test track. Must be great to be the boss of a Japanese company :-)

Look up Andy Granatelli's gas turbine powered car that was leading 4 laps from thend of the Indianapolis 500 in 1967 when a $4 wheel bearing failed.

Grassroots Motorsports Magazine is doing a build up on an old 1950's microcar involving a front mounted, front wheel drive tube frame autocross car. It looks like a slightly large FSAE car. I really wonder what it would feel like to drive. You are sitting on the rear axle.

Here is a link, sort through to find some pics:
