I have updated the FSAE Adams/Car templates to better represent a Formula SAE car than the original MSC FSAE templates available for MSC support. I hope teams will use these models and recommend or even share any improvements.

Model Update
For anybody that downloaded the database before today, note the solver settings were very tight. Use the values listed below instead of the values in the *.asy files, otherwise you will probably see an error message "HMIN = 0.000". While I was experimenting with solver settings and SmartDriver, I reset the zero threshold value lower than the default Adams settings.

[SOLVER_SETTINGS]
INTEGRATOR = 'gstiff'
CORRECTOR = 'modified'
FORMULATION = 'SI2'
HMAX = 0.1
HINIT = 0.0001
HMIN = 0.0000001
DYNAMICS_MAXIT = 6
EQUILIBRIUM_ERROR = 0.1
TLIMIT = 20.0
ALIMIT = 10.0
STABILITY = 0.01
EQUILIBRIUM_MAXIT = 150

Thanks!
Haven't looked at it yet, but I appreciate it.

John,
I downloaded the file and when I try open the frame template appears this mensage for me:
ERROR: The shell file 'mdids://uta_98/shell_graphics.tbl/WSHL153.shl' could not be opened for input. Check the spelling of
the file name and the file protections.
Do you know why this happen?
Thanks!

The graphics file alias is specified in the chassis template. When the database is published subsystem aliases are updated, but the template is not.
I see this as bug or need for an enhancement. Adams/Car should identify the graphics file alias and reference it in the subsystem file just like a bushing property or any other property file.
The work around is to create a database with the alias of UTA_98 in that database under the shell_graphics.tbl directory place the file "WSHL153.shl".
or
Open the file "_fsae_chassis_3.tpl" in a text editor. Do a find and replace on the string
find "mdids://uta_98/shell_graphics.tbl/WSHL153.shl"
replace "mdids://acar_shared/shell_graphics.tbl/WSHL153.shl"
Then put the graphics file WSHL153.shl in C:\MSC.Software\MD_Adams_x64\2010\acar\shared_car_ database.cdb\shell_graphics.tbl
or
Just ignore it. It's just a graphic for visualization.

There are some updates for different swaybar and powertrain configurations. I shall post then in the next couple of days.

Does anybody has tested the assembly of dual_brake?? It just doesn't work on my computer... I've already modified the sover parameters, but it doesn't work at all.

If you will email your database (*.cdb) and the message file *.msg to jburford@burford-eng.com I will take a look at it.

There are a few parameters that will improve the model stability. These are steering controller gains for machine control of events.
Assembly file parameter section:
'rack_ratio ' 'single ' 'real' 82.0
'steering_ratio ' 'single ' 'real' 6.0
also the halfshaft stiffness is a problem for acceleration events. The parameter below will improve model stability. Of course, calculation of actual halfshaft stiffness is preferable.
Subsystem file "fsae_rear_susp_4.sub" parameter section:
'halfshaft_stiffness ' 'single ' 'real' 20000000.0
Last issue, "Quasi Static Straight Line Setup" is fussy. As a rule, don't using it. Give your simulation a second or two of settle time instead.

Hi,
first of all thanks for your job.
I am in the process to play with adams again after quite a long time and i found your FSAE templates here on the forum. So i would like to have some practice with them but...
I have a problem when opening subsystems and assemblies, probably connected to folder locations or similar: when i try to open a subsystem or an assembly, adams seems not to find the corresponding template, because the default folder where it searches is wrong.
I tried both to change my files locations to this folder or to change files properties with a text editor but have no success.
This is one of the messages displayed, for example: "cannot find property file <temp>/springs.tbl/spring_front.spr"
Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you very much!

You need to create a database alias "temp" that points to the files located in directory "temp.cdb". Or edit your acar.cfg with a line similar to the following:
DATABASE temp G:/Fsae/databases/temp.cdb

Hi,
thanks for your help.
i finally managed to make it working.
In the mean time, i've created a "kinematic" configuration of suspension templates to allow to investigate the effect of having or not compliance in bushings. In this sense, do you know if the propery file of the bushings are trustable? I onestly don't know how big the compliance of a rod end or a spherical joint could be.
One problem i have also noticed is that if you try to do a parallel travel analysis with a tyre property specified for your tires, then it doesn't work, but work fine with a "rigid" wheel. don't know why.
anyway thank you very much for your help.
I will go forward to model and simulate from here!
im a member of a new team and i want to ask you if secondary air injection system is allowed in the competition.''Any device that has the ability to throttle the engine downstream of the restrictor is prohibited'' According to this regulation im not sure if we can use a secondary air injection system
