Hi, my name is Aaron Park, and I am a student at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST www.kaist.ac.kr) (http://www.kaist.ac.kr)) I just thought it was a huge shame that we were not a part of the SAE community, and I was hoping to enter our school into the formula series of the SAE organization. However, because we are completely new to this, and because of the fact that Korea lacks in collegite automotive technology, we are facing a great deal of difficulties. How would we go about entering this organization, and finding all the necessary information to help us design, build, and race these cars? Any information beyond what can be found on the main websites would be greatly appreciated, and if any schools wanted to set up a partnership for the initial development of our team, please email me at aaronpark123@yahoo.com. Thanks so much, and hopefully in a couple of years we will be able to meet at international events. Thanks - Aaron

All I can say is that to enter, you don't need much more than what's present on the FSAE series websites (the Australian and Japanese competition in your case, I guess).
As for setting up a team, nobody here can actually help you, because it requires a lot of effort on your own side.
Effort means founding a club and advertising to gain student members and supporters among the staff of the university. After founding you should be able to start planing your car, select an event to participate and looking for sponsors.
All that is quite a lot of work, that you can not possibly do on your own. You will have to find a few fellows at your university who can help you.
As for us, all we can do is to wish you good luck, so... Good luck actually.

I there was a team from Korea at formula student uk last year, Yeungnam university.
There car was doing pretty good too till it failed in the endurance.
It might be worth getting in contact with them.

Aaron,
Our records show that seven teams from Korea have competed in Formula SAE events. Yeungnam University has the longest record starting with the Michigan event back in 2002. The others are Kookmin University (started in 2004), Hoseo University and the University of Ulsan (both 2005), Chungbuk National University, the Korea University of Technology and Education, and the Kumoh National Institute of Technology (all in 2006). You may be able to get some advise from them.
There is wealth of information available on the official Formula SAE web site at:
http://students.sae.org/competitions/formulaseries/
Look under "Rules and important Documents" and under "Resources".
And on the Formula Student Germany web site at:
http://www.formulastudent.de/academy/
There was some information on the Formula Student (UK) web site a while ago, but it must have been removed in one of the revisions to the web site.
The most difficult tasks you will face as a new team will not be the technical issues, but those of organizing and managing a team. Project and time management is the biggest challenge that any team faces.
Good luck, and we hope we see a team from KAIST in the near future.

thanks for all the support guys, I am really looking foward to participating in the SAE formula events....
So basically,
I will have to
1) find classmates to join our club
2) find sponsors and gain support from my university
3) design and build the car
4) participate in events?
would this be the proper procedure?
Also if anyone has founded their SAE group at their university, please let me know how you joined, and what troubles you faced.
How many members are usually in a team?
thanks so much, and any additional information is greatly appreciated- aaron

You should be able to find many discussions that is similar to your questions. If you feel that there are too many to read ... believe me, many of us first started this way. I personally, spent many many hours reading hundreds of emails when it was in the mailing list format. Thanks God for this forum!
