View Full Version : Best Looking Car

Alright, let's hear it. Who had the best looking cars at comp? I am slightly biased, but I have to say that UNM had the absolutely sweetest car at comp. Close second to UTA though....

I think our body styling was top 5 at comp, not because i designed it, but because it doesnt seem like many other teams 'design' theirs. The only other car that I thought had decent design was one from germany. they were almost a dark purple/blue and silver, but i forget their name despite the fact that im looking at the picture i took of them. their sidepods were nicely shaped and i liked the cut into them on top.
I also think UTA was one of the only winged team to find the right styling proportion for car-to wing "fitting-ness". I think, from a sheer styling point of view, that if you take their wings off of their car, it would lose its sensationality and would be a mediocure body design. It would be more function, than form if they lost their wings; mainly being because they use the model-aircraft-paper-type-stuff with a top nose cap method in making thier body. Frame tubes can be sexy...if your a frame guy...but i'd rather have styling lines that arent fully dictated by goofy frame people http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
Others that I thought were very slick, were NC state, and UM Rolla. I'd put all these in my top five. It is kind of sad though, that body design isnt even paid attention to in judging, unless it's bad. From all the work that many teams put into making one, it's disapointing that it cant help you get points wherase it can only make you lose them (happened to our car last year...)

Opening this thread is dangerous because of the wide range of opinion...i dont mean to rip on people, but realize the car you built obviously looks best to you, because your mind has conformed to its curves. So i think one can only comment on other teams cars when they are making a top 5 list.

Im not sure what you mean by "design" unless you mean CFD. Cause wether you design it in CAD or build a plug from scratch, if the end result looks good it doesnt matter. Although i like the smooth lines on the nose of your car your side pod looks a little deformed like some one ran into it, but overall a very nice looking car... I personally think the integration of flat surfaces and curved surfaces make a car look more sharp and aggressive, this is the new movement that most manufacturers are making, on the extreme side is Cadillac.
By far, the best looking car in my opinion was the car from Quebec with the Carbonfiber "Batmobile" looking car...i dont have a pic uploaded on a website that i can link to though, but hope to soon. Does anyone know which car i am talking about?

Batmobile? disagree...
ETS is pretty cool and I LOVE NC's carbon workmanship.
I think the UWAM is the best from what i saw at the comp.

I think our car came out pretty good, however aestetics wise, it needs a rear wing to balance out the looks. Bare carbon body came out nice, and the udnertray came out real nice.

In my opinion.....from good design comes good looks! cars that are designed and built well always look good......u should be able to tell a great looking car even when its body is removed!
best looking? ETS hands down!!!!
im also a big fan of western australia

I would say that ETS had the best looking car and UTA's was very nice as well.
With regard to favoring the lines of the car you built.. I'm not to fond of our car's look, With or with out the Beaver RamAir.

Now that i look at it, if you had UWAM's rims, your car would really look kick ass...its amazing how much rims make a car look good.

would have to disagree here. i work half in marketing on our team, and a sweet and smooth looking car is more likely to bring in the cash.
all right, its design and testing etc. that make a car go fast, not the amount of cash thrown at it. but think of what you could do with an extra $5000! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
and anyway, if your car looks beautiful its will probably help your team work harder too.

I didn't design the body work and for the most part it was ment to fit frame. The big scoop was a last minute addition to cure overheating problems. As for next years car, it should look fairly similar though it won't have such a high entrance as the top bar is being removed. We should also have OZ wheels too. I'm hoping that we will get some kind of rear body work also, complete with scoops.
All good looking cars. I'm impressed by most everything at the competition these days, but you've got to agree, NC State raised the bar on having a pro looking car. Here's a good pic.

I don't have any pics to show of our car but i think our car looked good.
The main thing i wanted to say is how important the marketing bit is. While meeting with a major sponsor we were talking about formula sae and showed him some photos of other cars. He looked at one car and said if our car looked like that we wouldn't be getting his money. He wanted to make sure his sticker and money was going on a car that he thought looked good.

But unfortuantely, the rear cover may have been the cause for their engine blowing in endurance.

But since the chassis wasnt built by the students, i think i prefer this one ...

Have you guys ever seen the video of that taking the corner on two wheels? Damn good driving if I must say so myself! They plan on lowering the CG this year. That one was very top heavy because they had to modify the existing roll cage to be compliant with the rules. They have some more money this year because they do not need to buy the expensive dc-dc converters and what have you and will be able to put more into the chassis. I think you might see a pretty good car from them this year!

From a Canadian perspective, Windsor's car turned out real nice (i seem to remember some complaints about too much time spent on body work though) and I like to think ours (Waterloo's) turned out pretty mean looking-somewhat helicopter like

I spoke to one of the Helsinki guys at competition and he said it was all done by them, by hand which I was quite impressed by. Their university does apparently have a mill that can do moulds but they were still going to charge the team thousands to use it! I'm currently in the process of making our bodywork which should, all being well, be pretty damn awesome....but then I'm bound to say that!

I think our car also doesn't look that bad, the Technical University of Darmstadt's beta2007.
In terms of style we unfortunately had to raise the cars ride height for the endurance where these pictures were taken because of the bumpy road.
My favourite ist the munich's nb06, though

This is slightly off-topic, but our body is actually somewhat on schedule, and we should be painting in the next couple days.... Our school colors are Columbia Blue and White (Columbia blue is light blue, similar to baby blue). We're trying to figure out our paint scheme, this is what I'm proposing (yes, that is copy paper and post-it notes). Ignore the green (mold release), the blue line would taper to virtually no thickness at the back, and would get very wide at the front... anyone have any suggestions to how to make light blue and white (and maybe some black) look good on this body? I know the nosecone isn't on, it wasn't quite finished when I took this pic.

And soon they will be bragging about finishing fourth in their class, neglecting to mention that there were only five competitors in that class, and the fifth was Central LA's Back Alley Online Community College of Fine Arts who didn't actually make the event because they got sidetracked preparing their art bike for Burning Man and never got the bong shifter working because...

Like the one year SDSU competed in HPV in the early 00's
It went well, until they were testing it on the main drag highway in town and one of the stabilizer wheels folded.

Is it sad that when I saw DART's picture the first thought that came to my mind was "ohh those are some sexy sidepods" ? Big Grin
Why am I not surprised, Jack?

Our team has always felt that a race car should be loud, there was a car at MIS this year that unless you within 10ft you'd think the car wasn't running. Isn't that like a safety hazard?

The tires will be up for purchase soon, I can't answer right now on when exactly but they will be an option for the 2010 season ;-)
The development work was done as a collaboration between Conti and Lions (as my Diploma thesis).
They are Radials with new compound and construction and have also lost some weight compared to last year's Conti's.

I bet you'd like to see that..
but then again.. it's in German.. is that at all helpful for you? ;-)
I could probably work my way through it.
Ja, das ist ok. Mein Deustch ist schlecht, aber ich mag ein kampf.
I'm thinking about doing a year of grad school in Germany, if my home uni lets me, in a place where they make their own tyres. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif This would give me a change to pick up some more technical German, if you don't mind.
One of my German friends said he had to write his thesis in English, but he was working for GM. Bachelors, Diplom or Masters? Congrats btw.

wow! I wasn't aware that you guys would be willing to fight your way through.. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
anyhow, as you can probably imagine, Continental isn't keen on sharing what we did (or how we did it) too openly, or to put it they way it was said to me: " You're not allowed to show the thesis to anyone external." - normal procedure really..
thanks for the congrats, Im soooo happy to be done with it - Diploma that was
@Zac: I'm sure you know a lot yourself... "Development Engineer - Vehicle Dynamics" ;-)
I know just enough to be able to get myself into trouble.
But yeah, tire companies are notoriously secretive. what you're describing is essentially par for the course.
Of course, I would be interested in seeing what you did for competitor benchmarking as well as how you established overall design philosophy/goals. I won't hold my breath on that though.

Let's get this thread back on topic!
That Darmstadt car is something else, but we've got a little something of our own....

Haha, I was waiting for someone to parody that picture. Nice pipe wrench btw.
We had the roll-out yesterday. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Miki,
Your car looks great. That's an awesome looking car with 10 inch wheels. Some of the 10 inch cars look a bit funny. Those wets always look pretty tough though.
I am waiting for more people to parody those Darmstadt pics. Our team leader has some clothes that would look great next to a car.
Cheers

Thanks Olly,
We put wets on the car to have some more ground clearance for the roll-out. Car looks better on slicks though..

What does she weigh this year?
Also, you guys use r25B or LC0?
Thrainer

Their website says 150 kg and LC0.
Miki, since when have you been testing the new car this year?
Thomas
@J.R. We're evaluating multiple compounds, among those are indeed LC0 and R25B.
@Thrainer Let's just say long enough to discover (and solve) some problems http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
