Does the template have to go straight in horizontally or can we also move it vertically if required? This might be a silly question but we are having problems fitting it in with the steering rack if it has to go in horizontally all the way.

4.2 Cockpit Internal Cross Section template

Question # 2: With the internal cross section template, when passing this template, must the template be slid along the floor of the vehicle, or will the template be allowed to move vertically as the template is moved into the interior of the car?
Answer # 2: The template does not have to be slid along the floor of the car. We will allow the template in Figure 9 to be moved up and down a little as it is moved from the driver’s area forward towards the pedals. We have not given a specific dimension for how much up and down, but up to approximately 5 cms (2 ins) should be acceptable.

So will this template eliminate the possibility of running the rack on the bottom?

From what we've seen quite the opposite. It prevents the rack from being positioned towards the top of the cockpit (you don't really want it all the way at the top as the suspension geometry would give you steering issues in bump). For this reason, we've put ours at the bottom of the chassis and had to make the rest of the front box slightly bigger to accomodate the template.

It stops you sticking the steering rack across the drivers shins. http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2769/dscf3110qn3.jpg

With the templates, its a lot easier to get in and out.
This year we made our car to the 2009 rules, made it a lot easier for the taller/larger people to drive. DId mean that we needed quite a lot of expanding foam to make up a seat for the drivers.
