I just stumbled across this. I've seen several other turbo setups off to the side of the car and I hadn't ever heard this before I just found it. Does anyone else have any experience with it? I'm going to go look at our setup right now to see if I can come up with any solutions. I think we're probably pretty close to the center line being 350mm above the ground, but I don't think the entire turbo assy is.

We've always had to build a side impact structure for our intake tract. Everything in the assembly must be above 350mm, not just the centerline.

Now that I look at all of the other pictures that I have I'm noticing how everyone else got around it.... That includes a pic on your website where the turbo's back far enough that nothing is in the way of the side impact structure.

I'm not sure which picture you are referring to, but the first year we went turbocharged, the side impact protection of the inlet tract rule did not exist. For the past couple of years, the right sidepod was build the same structurally as our monocoque to satisfy protection of the inlet tract per the rules.

It's looking like we're just going to modify the exhaust slightly and pick up the turbo and everything two inches so it's beyond the 350mm rule. It should help with oil return any way, but I really didn't want to move that weight up any higher.

The rule was introduced in the 2006 rules I believe.

There was a German team running a setup like that, turbo and restrictor longitudinally mounted in the sidepod at FSG last year. The turbo (including the lowest part of it) and the thottle body and restrictor was above 350 mm above ground. HOWEVER, they were running a sidepod mounted intercooler (which had is lowest part approx. 50 mm off the ground).

I brought up with the head of scrutineering (we want everyone to play by the same rules, don't we), he claimed it wasn't a part of the intake system. I was amazed by this as I tried to argue that it violated the intent of the rule (impact from the side results in completly unrestricted engine when the intercooler comes off).

The argument stopped when one of the scrutineers threatened with a re-scrutineering of my own team's car.

Only bad memory I have from FSG though.

So, if you run a intercooler and are going to FSG, you could gamble and have it mounted down low, I won't snitch! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
