hi guys,
iam in kinda dilemma to choose an 600cc engine or some engine of lesser capacity . if of a lesser capacity which one to use and how here to procure them and also by not compricing on the power output . last year we used a yam r6 but thought go for a lesser cc . if anyone could enlighten me on that will be great.

I believe either a smaller motor with a turbo, or a 600 na motor will work. A 600 turbo is overkill, but of course many do this very sucessfully. The smaller motor might be overstressed with the turbo on it, one thing to keep in mind. Its pretty hard to come up with something better than a 600 sportbike motor with tranny, but search around, its been discussed in detail here.

I would say you should be looking for more specifics in the engine you choose such as a torque curve for drivability, or if you're going for power for acceleration. Also having a common engine as other teams is nice, seeing as if something goes wrong you may have the choice of buying or borrowing parts to get up and running again.

I think the engine you wish to run should reflect the design philosophy your team has adopted

I agree with bowtie man- its all about what you want out of your car. A 600 is good for max power, and ease of installation (built in tranny), but a 250 or 400 will probably be lighter and provide a healthier torque curve, at the expense of a big power number.

Smaller engines are hard to find. CBR600 is the most common engine in FSAE because of its availability. Also, a lot of team know the CBR really well and will be willing to help you.

Also, fitting an turbo on a twin or a single is really hard. There's not much 3 or 4 cyl with less than 600 available.

Of course your team is from india so you may have some crazy 450cc tri cylinder engine in your country...

A relatively popular engine is the 450cc twin yamaha. It's affordable for a wealthy team and parts shouldn't be too hard to find (new) because it's a """common""" engine.

The CBR600 is wonderful. A lot of people crash/die with this bike and there's a lot of used parts.

The 250cc Honda CBR engine shouldn't be too hard to find, in Australia at least - we have road rules that say for the first 2 years of your motorcycle licence you can have a max. engine capacity of 250cc, and they seem to be the prefered ride for younger riders. I think i actually heard of one of the teams from the UK or America getting one shipped over from here.

I would say that a well tuned 600 turbo will give you the most healthy torque curve. Our last 2 engines has delivered ~110 Nm at 6000 rpm, and above 90 Nm from 4000-10000 rpm.

I haven't seen any naturally aspirated FSAE-cars with any thing that even comes near this. Sure peak power is cool, on the paper. A 600 turbo needs a lot of work but nothing beats it's drivablity.

we decided to go RMIT's way and go down from GSXR600 to the suzuki sv500.
