The sort of thing you'd use to bring three tubes to an engine engine mounting for example.
Anybody that's done work on "optimising" these beasties care to share the gist of it? (how thick the base the bolt head sits on needs to be before it no longer influences the stiffness of the joint, the effect of wall thickness on the node stiffnes etc)

what are the reaction loads you've calculated at the joint?

The one I had in mind is just engiene reaction loads - 3kN or so.
Where are these 'DSR' forums?

The tapered joint thing has been in the SCCA/CASC GCR as a preferred method of attaching a fore/aft brace to a roll bar for the past 20 years or so...it is a nice design. Just make sure you select a self releasing taper if you want to be able to take it apart in the field without a puller (or a big hammer).
