We were fortunate to find a local sponsor who was willing to come out and do a demo of their portable CMM unit with a laser scanning head. We made a video about the process and wanted to share it because frankly I thought the whole thing was freakin' sweet.

Now that you have a scan of the engine what software do you plan on using to convert the STL? I have access to a Atos white light scanner and have scanned Portland State's engine but unfortunately I do not have access to any software to convert the file.

We got a demo of the software to export the file as well.

A point cloud I believe. (It is so fine it looks like surface)

That is pretty cool, how much does a set up like that cost?

Geomagic is the way to go. It's an pretty incredible program that can take you from a point cloud to useful surfaces very quickly. As with any scanning and reverse engineering, garbage in = garbage out.

I think they said something about the arm costing like 70k. The time was donated to us, so I am not 100% sure.
