FSAE takes ALOT of time and effort to build a car. I know that GPA's have to suffer from being part of a Formula SAE team. I frimly belive that this expercince and other activites can over shadow a not so good GPA. This may seem like a way to personal question so dont reply if you dont want to, but what kind of GPA do you think is average of involved FSAE team members.

I'm not a good example, but I failed out due partially to FSAE. I think I ended up graduating with a 1.82 GPA from another school. On the other hand, FSAE got me the excellent job I have now (I tell people half of what I learned in engineering came from building race cars) - and I got a 4.0 in grad school.

i used to run right around a 3.0 gpa until i got serious in the club, now im pulling a 2.5 exactly cuz thats what it takes to keep my scholarship.
As we like to say around the workshop:
There's no GPA in FSAE

Lost my scholarship due to FSAE, but gained a job in a machine shop that is paying my tuition (and gave me a key for late night FSAE fabing).
I win.
It definitely lowers your GPA. Before being a main player on the team, mine was 3.9, when I became much more involved on the team, it dropped to around the 3.0 range. Luckily, I had enough credits of A's from early on where I graduated with a 3.5 cumulative, but it was dropping every semester.
The reality is that I learned twice as much while I was getting a GPA in the 2.7 - 3.2 range than I was while my GPA was 3.8 - 3.9 range.
I recommend trying to keep your GPA at 3.0. That's what a lot of companies require to interview, other than that, I don't think it really matters as long as you are one of the main players on an FSAE team.

took me a second too! its Grade Point Average. our university operates on Percentages. yes fsae reduces your average, mine dropped by 10% but thats partly because i joined FSAE during my hardest year and then lost motivation for uni work, not really over constrained on time (6 hours of sleep a night is enough). i dropped from a 90% avg to 80%. plan to spend this year testing and having fun http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Over here doesnt matter how much above 70% you get, you still get a masters with distinction.
We don't have GPAs in England. You either get a 1st, 2:1, 2:2, or a 3rd class degree. I was on for a first after two years and then FSAE hit and I decided to aim for a 2:1 (you need a 2:1 or 1st to get interviewed by any decent companies by and large).

Lets just say I'm in my 6th year at college (only 3rd in FSAE) and during those past 2 years I've been involved with FSAE, my GPA has changed... alot lower. I wouldnt trade it for the world though, I learn way too much from being on the team, 10 times more than any classes Ive been in. Granted, the classes always pointed me in the right direction to start off.
