the three most unique things that i find in FSAE is
1>> FSG does not give even a certificate of participation, hence when some stupid interviewer asks you for proof , you have to make interesting stories.
2>>that there are always evil forces in brake system.
3>>after doing FSAE project, you actually feel like engineer.

1) Have people on your team that give a shit. They will be the only ones that actually get the car built
2) Understand the engineering behind everything, do things legit with your OWN ideas (not "ooo this team uses XYZ system lets do that") and you will have a moderately light, reliable car. And, you'll be a better engineer.
3) Don't spend 100% of your time senior year on the racecar. 93% should be sufficient. Of the remainder, 4% should be at football games, the bars, with chicks, etc. 2.9% for sleep. 0.1% for that whole "homework" thing.

1) Everything takes 20 times longer then expected.
2) Take the time to get things right the first time.
3) Sleep deprevation and resin fumes make you do stupid things.

Seat time is the only thing that will definitely make you better.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Maximize your human resources: if a new member displays initiative and commitment, give them responsibility immediately. If an older member is losing heart, take away their responsibility.

1.running the car is more important than maiking your design complicated
2.break your driveshafts before coming to the competition
3.each and every component in your car is important

If its not important; ask yourself why its on the car!
1. Be realistic
2. Don't be rash
3. Justify EVERYTHING! To yourself, team-mates, everyone. If you can't justify you can't win!

1) Reliability is critical - a broken car in the pits won't win any events
2) Test and learn from the testing
3) If it can break, sooner or later it will. Bring spares and see 1)
hope there's some insight in there...its 2:30 am here so I make no promises about that

Ask these questions for every component:
1. Is it required by the rules?
2. Will it score extra design points?
3. Will it make the car go faster?
If the component does not answer any of these questions I would seriously reconsider putting it on the car.

1. Everybody has a plan until they get hit in the face. Make extras of every thing and building takes about 3 time longer than you think.
2. Test data sheets should weight more than the car.
3. There is no free lunch. Improve the variables that will yield the best gains and understand what they are affecting negatively.

Make sure your gas tank is big enough to finish endurance... ran out with 1/2 a lap left
