I'd say its more a function of choosing an engine size around 450cc displacement, and the available stuff out there being single cylinder.

Thats the reason in America, but in places like Europe and Asia/Australia, they have access to small displacement inline 4's out of the cbr250rr and bikes like that. UTA had a lot of success with the turbo 250cc 4 cylinder, before switching back to the 600cc. Theres never just one answer for a question like that. A good reason is any bit of justification as to why something is better in their opinion. Figure out the benefits and disadvantages of each option, and come up with the one that suits your needs and design the best.
