Does anyone else have any interesting team traditions? I'd like to hear about them and share with you one of ours.

Most of the team members here at Oklahoma go without a haircut starting from when we begin manufacturing until the car is running. This year I decided to go without shaving either. I think it started because some of the team members just didn't have time to get their hair cut because they were spending so much time on the car. Last year our Team Captain told us he would get a mullet if we got the car done on schedule. This year, both the Team Captain and I decided to continue the tradition. Below is my progression from normal college guy, to mountain man, and finally, hardcore NASCAR fan. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't know if its a tradition or not, but every leader on our team has some sort of crazy side project... These usually involve motorcycles, cars, trucks, and ISU FSAE fabrication space and equipment. We've got a section on our website dedicated to these projects.

http://sae.stuorg.iastate.edu/formula/gallery/Formula-Team-Motorcycles

Projects Include:
- Nissan-Buick Franken Pickup "Busan"
- Ford Probe-Truck
- ZX6R Powered Radio Flyer Wagon
- ASME Human Powered Vehicle aka. "Flaming Pile"

What the hell, where is Ted's super duper Fox project, I spent many a nite working on that thing with him.....it needs some publicity.

You should definitely show up to competition sportin' the NASCAR fan thing.

I told him he should have kept it, but I think after he went out in public and got dirty looks from mothers all around him (and this is in Oklahoma, mind you) he might have thought otherwise.

Wouldnt this be better suited for the off topic forums? Seriously, there have been so many Off Topic posts in Open discussion it has been ridiculous.

Probably not. because almost everything that can be discussed in the open discussion has already been done and you should only be using the search button. God forbid if you actually start a new thread asking a question that might or might not have been discussed a million years ago, 'cos you'll probably end up being the biggest jerk on the forum for asking that.
So i guess, the open discussion is now suited for this.

I didn't know this forum was called "Technical FSAE discussions ONLY". maybe they should change the name from OPEN!.

next to nothing good is discussed anyways...so calm down. This is fsae related. I dont like when ppl (rob woods....) just put up random shit about car parts they saw online in here....thats def an off topic item.

All right, fair enough, I can see the point about this being the "open" and not "technical" discussion.

But I do not see the point about everything being already discussed, so as a result, everybody might as well just clutter the forum with random shit. Yes, this forum has 76 pages that contain quite a few questions, and quite a few answers. But last time I checked, this competition is just as dynamic as any other motorsport series out there. So I dont really buy into what was said about nothing good being discussed. Just because someone doesnt post a radical new idea or interesting question every day doesnt give people excuses to fill up a forum with stuff that isnt going to help someone when they click the search button. Im sure all of you have been frustrated when working with the search function, because posts like this with a couple keywords in them that you may search for come up, and make searching tedious and slow.

you have only posted 5 times.....why are you complaining already? This is my 3rd year here and I am loving it...

People complaining about forum posts clutter this forum more than the posts they complain about, so you're really just shooting yourself in the foot. I believe we've discussed this previously. Please use the search feature.

back on (or off apparently) topic: traditions here? theres always our annual formula vs. baja chili cook off/drinkfest. chili + beer + formula/baja shop talk = good times.
also i guess you would consider us shaking our heads disappointedly at our solar team a tradition since it happens every year. the newest one was yesterday when i was shown their rear axle design with a frighteninly low safety factor. the second newest was when i saw them desperately groping for money at an alumni scolarship donor banquet. the third newest was them not lending us a 2 ft X 2ft X .25 in sheet of aluminum to do a carbon layup on due to "liability".
so yeah i guess you would call that a tradition.

We haven't done it yet, but we're organizing (and making a big deal about) a "tug of war" between the FSAE car and the Baja car.

We're calling ti the "first annual" which would imply tradition http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

The super duper Fox project is still alive and well. In fact, we were thinking of having a slowmobile drag race. The contenders:
- Woody's (Chassis Team Lead) - 90' Honda Civic, 200K miles, 70hp, 2,000 lbs
- Tony's (Project Director/President) - 92' Ford Escort, 216K miles, 88hp, 2,500lbs
- Ted's (Technical Director) - 86'? VW Fox, ~150K miles?, 80hp?, 2,000lbs
- Solar Car Truck - 05' Ford F-350 Diesel, 15K hell-miles, 325hp, 8,200lbs

I think Ted was going to drive the Fox into the shop and work on it. I know many necessary crossmembers have been welded into my Escort using shop tools and unusable steel tubing. Our shop also makes an excellent place to change brake calipers when it's -17F outside. Being a Formula leader has its benefits!
