how do u ppl do the donuts and half skids on FSAE cars.....do u ppl do something like locking only one tyre going about it.....or actually is it allowed to lock single tyres or just the front tyres and do some funky skid stuff off racing.....

horsepower, and experince driving rear wheel drive cars...come on, cold racing slicks are worthless for traction.....

1. Turn the wheel to full lock.
2. Step on the long skinny pedal (on the right) really hard.

It'll look something like THIS. (http://gozips.uakron.edu/%7Ejdstuff/FrancoBurnout.avi)

i saw the video....but still left with lil confusion...
1. are rear tires on full throttle or some amount of braking is there...

2. is the front tire about which the car is rotating perfectly locked?

and how do u achieve that purpose .... i mean that locking only one tire....

or may be my whole concept is wrong....
please enlight me on this.

Nice car control on that one Jason.

I was thinking more like this though:
http://rclsgi.eng.ohio-state.edu/~fsae/Videos/Buckeye%20Burnout%20medium.avi (http://rclsgi.eng.ohio-state.edu/%7Efsae/Videos/Buckeye%20Burnout%20medium.avi)
(45MB file size and DivX codec)

No brakes. Just too much power for the tires.
Don't they have burnouts in your part of the world?

Shanks,
The technical term is oversteer. Burnouts and drifting are extremes of oversteer. It occurs when in the course of a turn your front tires maintain more grip than your rear tires. In the case of a burnout, this is achieved as JD said; with full steering lock and application of excessive power to the rear wheels to break 'em loose.

As with most race cars, FSAE vehicles are traction limited and are perfectly capable of burnouts at will. If your goal is to do this with a street car, you may run into a few issues.
1. Car has to be RWD (no brainer here)
2. car has to be able to deliver enough power to overcome rear tire traction
3. Limited slip differential helps a lot.

As you can see in the previous videos, the pirouette does not start from a dead stop. You have to have some minimal speed, initiate a turn, and full throttle with full steering lock; hold full/full and you should get noise, smoke, grins.

Shanky,

Turn the wheel and floor it. No special tricks or anything with us. Some street cars use Line-Lock where they distribute all braking force to the front wheels and lock them, but that is for larger street cars, not for FSAE.

My personal favorite is applying a little brake, turning the steering wheel to full lock, and getting on the throttle. This works from a stop or if you are good while rolling. I prefer from a stop though, it plants one wheel and leaves it there even after letting off the brakes. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Steve,

Did you just give instructions on how to loop it?? You know how much crap you're getting at the next drive for that right? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

we did a pretty crazy one today on the remainder of a set of tyres. if any one can tell me how to post a viedo its pretty sick. There is really no reason for any car to ever be able to do this, its just absurd.

You could do a donut in a FWD drive car, but that's just dumb. The really cool ones are all wheel drive (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1963133367989543595). See also dahlback (http://www.dahlbackracing.se/)

That Ohio State vid finally made my housemates understand why I spend so much time on the RFR car. And why I traded for an OSU shirt. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've done better but don't want to anger the campus police TOO much. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes on some good donuts sometimes one front tire stays stopped (see the LF in the video for a few rotations). It's not braked though.
