Hi,

This is Lee Williams from Williams Racing Developments, I want to introduce myself and also our new differential for FSAE/DSR type cars.

I have worked in motorsport for most of my professional life including 5 years in Formula 1 for BAR and Jaguar, I now live in San Diego and run Williams Racing Developments.

You can read more about me on the site but I wanted to let you all know about our new salisbury type differential. Our website has most of the details so I won't waste your time here but if you are interested please call to discuss our special university pricing.

Here is the link to the diff page on our site....

Thanks and I look forward to talking with more of you soon,

Lee

NICE. Finally there's a buy & bolt in Salisbury available for FSAE teams. Up to this point, the only way to run a Salisbury was to custom build one starting with the gears.

That's a neat looking package. I would anticipate these things to sell like hot cakes as long as the pricing is right...

Agreed. I passed the link on to our drivetrain guys.

Willrace,

The unit looks pretty neat and seems to be an good differential option but I have to ask you about the SSCA runoffs. I follow D-sports along with other formula/full body classes. Correct me if I am wrong but didnt two cars equipped with your setup have failures at the event. One came in the pits with a locked diff and the other one had a catastrophic failure that took out some bodywork, engine damage and other assortied things I couldnt see. Not so much trying to bag your product but if someone were to foot the bill for something like that and it popped I would be pretty pissed. I dont know Taylors failure record for their diff assemblies but I am pretty sure it is zero since I havent heard of one giving out. More testing needed before sales or is that not your stuff?

Thanks for bringing it up. First off, our stuff is all about testing before selling, we have had three of these prototypes running in cars all year before even announcing the product. During this testing there were other minor issues that have been solved prior to releasing the production units.

Onto the runoffs failures, the first failure was not a differential failure but a bearing failure, upon stripping the unit we found that the non drive side bearing had been pressed heavily into the housing, there was a tell tale sliver of material underneath this bearing which told us it was not sitting square, further investigation upon our return found the races of the bearing to be indented by the balls. The fact that the bearing was damaged on assembly meant that the bearing failed, the diff was then being spun inside a failed bearing and went into meltdown, this is NOT a WRD problem, however, we looked after the guy in question and he ran for the next 8 days trouble free.

The failure in the race was due to the customer deciding to use bolts to hold the sprocket onto the carrier, Jean Luc has used bolts with no issues, Stohr fits studs, we are currently speccing a stud to be used in this area. During the course of the race the bolts loosened and the sprocket came off, again, this was not a failure of the differential unit itself but an installation issue.

As far as other products failure rates I have heard that there have been problems in some areas, I haven't seen them personally but I trust my sources.

Lee,

looks like a good product, but it may be a bit beefy for a FSAE car. We have been running a salisbury for several years and are near 65% of the quoted weight of your assembly (with bearings). Would you consider making an ultralight version for fsae?
