Just thought it would be interesting to see what other teams have to work with.

We are lucky to have our own building just outside the main campus over near research park. We have an office, large middle bay with two bay doors, machine room, and jig/welding room. We are down a little dead end road, and never really bother anyone down here, but the down side is the fact that most people on campus don't know we exist.

From the outside.

That is pretty slick. I've been wanting to get a webcam in our shop for awhile now, we really need to get a website up first though.

We do feel really lucky to have our own space and machine shop, if only we could get the funding and act together enough to produce some competitive cars. Hopefully this year and next will be different.

Lots of hard work from previous teams to get moved into that shop and get the equipment purchased/donated. That happened around 10 years ago when Formula was just starting up here.

I'll see if we can post one of our shop at the moment... but it will only serve as a 'before' shot. We just received a large donation to improve our facilities including new dynos etc. to be completed by March. We'll have some hurdles building the car while the renovations are taking place, but we may set up a cam to do a time-lapse video in the end.

I'm genuinely excited about the next 3-4 years for our SAE teams.

This is the shop that we have had for the past year. Not sure how long we will be able to keep it, the building was scheduled for demolition this fall but it looks like we can stay for another year.

The building is at the entrance of the campus, still not a lot of people know that we have our shop there.

From the outside

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/IMG_0233.jpg

The first room, right now we have the third car sitting here and the fourth car hanging on the wall.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130154.jpg

If you go down the stairs into the second room. We have the fifth car and last year’s frame both waiting for a rebuild. This is also acting as our welding room.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130155.jpg

The third room acts as a sort of office and lunch room.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130156.jpg

We have a small storage room behind the black wall with some tires and some metal.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130158.jpg

The fourth room is just more storage.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130159.jpg

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n191/JonMW/20091130160.jpg

We also have access to a machine shop with two manual mills and two manual lathes. There are also a 4-axis CNC lathe and a 3-axis CNC mill that we can use some times. The bad part is that it´s at the other side of campus so it takes about 15 min to walk there.

we're pretty lucky in terms of the size of our workshop. We got relocated in 2007 and the building we got was formerly a student common room. It's 2 stories: upstairs is the office, electrons and an area that's not really ours but we use it for meetings and as a "quiet area"; and downstairs we have assembly, fabrication, welding, machining, composites room and engine room. The one thing it doesn't have that would be awesome is a shower. We had access to one at our old workshop, but these days we just smell bad instead.

When we first moved in:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN2494.jpg

Assembly area earlier this year (managed to find a home for most of the old cars since then)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/19082009001.jpg

Office. We've got lots of old computers with LCD screens because one of our electrons convinced the ECE department to give us the computers they were disposing of
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN3563.jpg

Where we keep the electrons:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN3564.jpg

Engine room:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN3570.jpg

Fabrication:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN3565.jpg

Machining room (there's a welding bay and a small grinding/sanding room to the left)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/all4s/DSCN3566.jpg

It's all pretty messy at the moment but that happens around this time of the year.

I can see why. They are good machines for what they are and seem to last forever. I know ours has seen some stuff, but still works fine.

We are lucky enough to have our own "Formula room" since last year, which is the place all the design and assembly process takes place. We also have almost unlimited access to the schools' machine shop (actually the formula room is part of the machine shop). We also have a room for composite manufacturing and for storage purposes, but I don't have any pics of it right now. Anyway...

Most of the machinery outside the fs room is not property of the team, but they belong to the school's machine shop equipment.
The trumph is there way before the team was established.

Anyone else notice the homage to Smokey Yunick in the first post? That flat bed laser would be nice to have. Trumpf also makes a nice tube laser.

jm1495, I'm glad someone else noticed the 'Best Damn Garage in Town' sign. I didn't want to say anything since that would reveal me as a Nascar fan, and start the taunting by others. But that guy was ahead of his time, and I didn't know that he holds 9 US patents...pretty cool.

That's who started the whole shebang here on campus, and Doc (who is in charge of the building) does all his work on Nascar motors, and the effects of speed on manifold pressures.

We happen to have an old Daytona 500 1st place motor sitting in one of the corners collecting dust.

Not sure we should post that pic... our relationship with Doc hasn't exactly been a good one. He doesn't like us messing around in his areas of the shop. It took my sr design team quite a long time to prove to him that we weren't a bunch of idiots when we had to set the dyno up for our F4i. His stories are pretty legendary, though. Nascar (well, Winston Cup to him) was all about cheating and getting away with it. He can talk for hours without getting boring about all the things they used to do.

As a startup team we still don't have a place, equipment or anything. We are going to rent a place outside then uni due to the unsuitable working hours in the university. We can't even apply for sponsored software such as Recardo Wave since our computer lab schedule is highly unstable especially near exams.

To sum up....we envy you guys... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Nice to see how everyone works during the rest of the year. We usually only see you on events. To give you an impression how we live in Delft, here are some pictures.
For those of you who think we are lucky to have such a large amount of space: Yes we are, but it took years and lots of effort aquire the rooms and space we have now.

The pictures might be somewhat dark: The flashlight could not match the exterior light. You can see why in the last picture. It had something to do with a big white mess.

note: We share the hall with other teams like the Nuna (World Solar challenge team), Formula zero (Hydrogen Cart), Solarboat (Solar powered boat) and DARE (Delft Aerospace Rocket Engineers), though we are the largest team in there.

Main hall with milling machines, lathes etc. Shared space with other teams.

Our own part of the hall containing some older cars and in the back the milling machine and the lathe we usually bring to FSUK and FSG.

Everyone so far seems to have really nice big shop space. We're not so lucky, we've got half a room. Our machine shop is pretty nice but it's the department's shop so we have to share it with all the other classes/PhDs etc etc

Finally got around to uploading pics.

Cyclone Racing Shop (http://www.sae.stuorg.iastate.edu/?page_id=144)

Here's ours, our shop is in an old nuclear reactor room. Then we have a storage room that used to be the "sub-critical storage room," (still has trace levels of radiation...not supposed to spend more than an hour a day in there), and then we have an office upstairs that we converted into a computer lab after the ME department sold the old one off to the electrical and computer engineering dept. for grad student space. In the end not such a bad deal, we had to bust our butts to scrounge up some computers capable of running Solidworks, but surprisingly most of our 5-7 year old computers are running faster than the new dept. ones due to the fact that we didn't install all the bloatware that is on typical university computers. Plus the dept. computers have pretty lame graphics cards.
