View Full Version : Adjustable brake bias

I had a question earlier about ESP systems that could actuate the brakes, but I have discarded that idea, mostly due to the fact that it would be difficult to comply the rules.

Now I have a different idea of just distributing the brake bias front/rear. The most simple idea is to have a adjustable bias bar on the brake pedal, just like this: http://stoptech.com/whitepapers/proportioning_valves.htm
I guess most FSAE cars have this nowadays (we do atleast).

The disadvantage of this solution is the hassle of adjusting the bias. So a better idea would be to have a valve near the driver to adjust the pressure. Just like this: http://performanceunlimited.com/cobravalley/proportionvalve.html

Is there anything in FSAE rules preventing use of this ? I cannot find any signs of this in the rulebook ...

Teams do run proportioning valves. They're a band-aid, there's no reason to run one instead of a bias bar.

They're only reasonable in street cars where you can't fit a bias bar pedal assembly, IMHO.

But, to answer your question, no, there's no rule preventing you from using a proportioning valve.

Why not just use a remote bias bar adjuster? Like This (http://www.wilwood.com/Products/005-PedalAssemblies/004-RBBA/index.asp)?

Actually, the real question is, do you want your amateur drivers fiddling with a carefully selected brake bias in the middle of a run?

I've been autocrossing for years, and I still wouldn't mess with it mid-run. Just set it during testing and leave it be.

Just do the remote adjustable bias bar, if yours is a total pain to get to. the prop valve is just more brake lines to leak, and more weight than you need to deal with, there's really no use for it, other than in a car with one master cylinder.

actually, the real answer is...

you should learn how to use the balance bar adjuster, and use it all the time

With dual master cylinders, why not run a bias bar?? Its practically half there already!!
