Shootout will be returning to Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario. The event comprises of a full day of autocrossing against some of the top teams from North America. Entrants must be Formula SAE/Formula Student vehicles that have passed technical inspection at a sanctioned FSAE competition. All cars will be inspected for safety before admitted to the pit lane, according to the FSAE tech inspection form.

Over $2500 worth of prestigious awards, gifts and cash prizes are waiting to be won in both the team categories and individual performance categories. The grand prize is a voucher for a set of Hoosier tires (good for 10's or 13's http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif).

Good event- very fun track as always, but we are still looking for the organizers to open up the track. I promise, it isn't any more dangerous than the shifter karts that drive there...

Yeaaah no rain!
Another great UoT Shootout, that course is way more fun than the autorcrosses I'm used to. Thanks to everyone who organized and worked this event.

Teams,

The 2011 Shootout Results have been posted at fsaeutoronto . ca/ ?page_id=539

From the reactions of the teams the event ran well. We had just under 300 laps. Although it was cold in the morning, the sun was shining in the afternoon when the times started to drop.

Congratulations to ETS on the three-peat. Post up them pics!

Awesome, thanks for the results.

I'm sure a few of these questions could be answered with a quick perusal of the facebook, but I'm at work. So here we go:
-Of S&T, RIT, Akron, and other Goodyear teams, were any on 2704's?
-Did Toronto and UOIT run their newer single-powered cars?
-Was the course comparible to previous years or was it faster?

I can't confirm whether anyone was running the 2704's however given that some of them were on the 2697 (development version of 2696) at Michigan and they came from the Goodyear Shootout the week before, it is quite possible.

Toronto and UOIT had their single-cylinder cars out.

They tried to raise speeds on the course this year by opening it up a bit. The lap times stayed pretty much identical to 2010, although it was much colder this year. The track didn't feel any faster - then again we were stuck in first or second gear most of the day.

Cool! Thanks, windsoreng!

It would've been really cool to compete against Toronto, UOIT, and McGill, but our crank trigger ring chose to divorce itself from our TRX's flywheel and wreaked havoc inside the left-side crankcase cover. We made a new trigger ring, but I couldn't fix the sync loss from the VR sensor bracket I had attempted to re-straighten.

That's terrible, did you get it back up and running? I'm not that familiar with the TRX - was it a stock crank trigger ring or one that the team had made? Was it bolted on or splined?

I am assuming that this event will continue along with Formula North?

@Canuck Racing
Absolutely. The UofT Shootout will continue on. Formula North is not affiliated with the University of Toronto.

@Mbirt & Windsor

I attempted to make the track faster relying on much more of the kart track than in previous years. Looks like I will have to use less slaloms next year. Or maybe everyone is cool with a slow tight track......

The trigger ring was made by us (or me more specifically). Machined steel welded onto the flywheel. The TRX, like the 450x, is not EFI.

Mike, any chance of using the banking? That would make the course even more interesting than it usually is...

But an everso-slight change in the gap from the VR sensor to the ring caused all kinds of dropped-tooth sync loss errors once it began to fire. I would advise any team running a single cylinder (or odd-fire twin) with a non-OEM crank trigger scheme to consider hall sensing rather than the stock VR sensor.

I'm hoping the switch to a 32 bit ECU with only one crank/cam encoder available per firmware will help us some. I should have it on the dyno within a month.

@IronMike
I don't think us single-cylinder non-aero teams mind a slow tight track so much http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Are you excited for the 2012 WR450f with fuel injection? I'm trying to figure out if its flywheel and stator will retrofit into older WR's, but info is scarce for a bike that won't hit dealers until March.

You can still watch it at www.formulastudent.tv (http://www.formulastudent.tv) (in 720p)

The whole endurance is also up on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/FormulaStudentTV

Make sure to have a look at the FSGTV episodes:

Tobias, I watched the FSG2011 endurance live feed and it was awesome! My point was that ETS didn't make it to FSG2011 and that it would've been nice to watch the FSAE California 2011 and UofT Shootout 2011 winner race on track with the world's best teams.

Mbirt, I don't want to be presumptuous about who you would include in "the world's best teams" but GFR was at FSAE California 2011. GFR was a DNF in endurance at California, but autocross times might provide some insight:

1 Oregon State Univ (GFR) 61.463
2 Univ of Kansas - Lawrence 62.556
3 Univ of Maryland - College Park 63.192
4 Ecole De Technologie Superieure 63.979

Compare that to the top 4 at FSG:

1 Ravensburg DHBW (GFR) 50,580
2 München TU 52,543
3 Rochester IT 52,550
4 Oxford Brookes U 52,699

I would certainly consider ETS one of the world's best teams.

I had no intention to insinuate that FSAE California featured lesser competition than FSG (although others may). An ETS member was featured in the Kelley Blue Book FSAE California 2011 video stating that a top-5 finish was what the team needed to attend FSG. I only meant to say that it's too bad their plans did not work out and that I would have enjoyed watching them on track with the fast group in the FSG endurance. I believe we agreed on this point in a previous thread even...
