View Full Version : What heat range plugs are you running?

I was just wondering what teams are running for heat ranges on the NGK plugs. We've gone from the CR9E to the CR8E.

We used to run the hottest plug they had (in our Yamaha). I think tey were 7's. This kept the restricted engines from fouling at idle.

I dunno what heat range but we should probably change it. There's a ton of newish looking plugs sittin in the toolbox in the batcave.(aka our garage downstairs) They look fine except for the carbon deposits on 'em. But then I dunno, maybe we're just running too rich or I'm just stunned and don't know what I'm talkin about.

Running the stock CR9EH's with no foul-out problems on a sequentially injected Honda F4, 1300rpm idle.

Yeah, Phony, you don't know what you're at :-)

We run the stock CBR 600 plugs... nothing special. We do get carbon buildup but not when we're running properly. The carbon builds up when an endless stream of morons decide they like the sound of the engine and it gets started, run for a minute and shut down before it gets hot... many times a day.

We seem to run really rich just after startup or during startup... any comments? It seems like only a couple quick starts and shut downs will screw a set of plugs and we don't get a strong spark anymore. Running stock plugs, TEC II coils and fairly generic low impedence wires...

When we run properly (ie, warm up the engine properly and go for a drive) we get just a tiny wite ring on the edge of the electrode... perfect...

Don't know what fuel injection system you are running, but the start-up mapping is set rich. My guess is that it's the water temperature compensation, and the air temperature compensation tables that are making the plugs black. The engine needs a lot of fuel to start, so based on the set points in the ECU, the water and air tables add more fuel in addition to the fuel map. Then, as it warms up, the fuel is leaned off as the engine warms, until you get up to operating temperature, where there is no additional fuel added. Have more questions? Just ask.

Well, TEC II coils are generally on a TEC II. If thats the case, lean out your starup enrichments. They are simply under the enrichments menu. Cut back the Fixed One Second and Fixed TWenty Second enrichments, and blammo.........nice tan colored plugs
