View Full Version : University of Toronto 2nd Annual Formula SAE "Shootout"

vinHonda

Last year University of Toronto ran a successful lapping day at our Downsview Airport testing facility (yes, that's where the Pope and more recently the Stones played!) where we had 9 Formula SAE cars out, mostly from southern Ontario teams and of course, Cornell made a stunning appearance as well.

http://fsae.utoronto.ca/2002/100802.html

This year we will be hosting another event. We have set a tentative date of Saturday Sept 20th, 2003.

A response from last year's attending teams as to whether this date seems feasible would greatly be appreciated.

Also, if your team expresses interest in attending, please post.

That date sounds good- we'll bring our 2002 and 2003 cars. The course last year was nice and open so it was a blast to drive.

VinHonda, do you know if americans need to have VISA to get into canada? and which airport is the nearest to the Downsview testing facility?

RiNaZ

Rinaz,

Americans will probably require a VISA to leave the States...... but I'm not 100% sure. I know Canadians when entering the States must show their passports or citizen cards. The Downsview Testing Facility is actually and airport! But no commercial flights leave/arrive there.....it's Bombardier's facility for testing their own planes. You would land at Toronto's only Int'l Airport: Lester B. Pearson.

Any interest in attending our event? With a car?

Cheers!

I've never needed a VISA or passport to enter Canada, but I've only entered Ontario and British Columbia. You may need to show your social security card and original birth certificate, though.

Brent Howard

I don't think you need a visa to enter Canada, just your passport. A visa is something that you need to apply for and get special permission that is trip specific. I don't think the Americans that go to Casino Winsor are applying to enter Canada to gamble.

Hey Ben,

Glad to hear. More details to come. But last year's loooooooooooooong back straight used top end 5th gear into a very very very slow 1st gear roundabout. The track was bloody fast and plenty of fun as well though; very challenging.

Sounds good. Calgary..... will you possibly be making it down?!!

I regularly commute through ontario between NY and MI, no problem. ...So this venue hosts the Pope, The Rolling Stones, and FSAE cars. I like the sound of that. We are considering bringing up the '03 Kettering University car, I'll let you know if we work it out.

I just found out I'll be back at Cornell for another year, so things on my end are a bit up in the air...but people seemed to be interested in a return showing. This time, we might actually be prepared for it and everything. I'll push people to give it some thought and have someone let you know what's up ASAP.

As for Yuki, he's off doing Formula Russell racing in the Bay area, paying for it by tutoring or something. I dunno, sounds like a fun way of spending a year. Finished well in the one race he's got points in too...

Vinh,

Cornell wants to be there, but right now there's no definite answer. Once were back in school in about 2 weeks we can get the team together and see if we have the resources. Good luck with it, thanks for hosting it. Congrats on the Formula Student championship.

Thanks about Formula Student. It was a really cool win.

Anyone from RIT? Buffalo? Windsor? Toronto is only a 5-6 hour drive from MANY FSAE schools!

just a quick question:

how many drivers per car do you normally run at this event?

Ben Beacock
Co-Manager
2004 Gryphon Racing - University of Guelph

vinHonda
09-10-2003, 08:34 PM
There can be as many or as few drivers as you wish. Every car will just be lining up one after the other. Once a run is done in a car, you are free to re-join the queue, with whatever driver you want. We will keep track of WHO is physically driving each lap.

More info to come in an email to all participants soon!

Cheers!

P.S. Some have emailed me asking about how long the track, or more specifically, the back straight will be..... as some remember last year's back straight got us up to 5th gear! We probably wont' have that , but a lap will be around 1 min 30 secs. There will be straights, but I doubt using 5th gear. More like redline 3rd.

Cheers!

Man, wtf... we specifically redesigned our shifter for faster downshifts because of the 5th gear straight into the 2nd gear corner last year http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Seriously, though... that sector wasn't exact representative of the endurance at Pontiac... but is sure was fun!

Indeed it was fun! Maybe we'll try a 4th gear redline into a 1st gear bus stop? 3 downshifts is sometimes fun! We'll see.....

That's why it keeps bouncing. Ok. Now you guys are on the email list. We're glad you guys are bringing 2 cars. So are we..... the alumni on our team think their old 02 car can beat our 03 car.... so. we'll see!

I'm sending you what i sent teams b4.Basically..... waiver form, agenda, rules, flyer, etc. We wanna know if u guys wanna stay afterwards for dinner at Montana's bar and grill at YOrkdale mall. Western is coming so we have about 50 ppl so far. Let me know numbers so i can reserve seats.
