University of Washington Autocross

We wanted to congratulate the University of Washington on a fantastic
autocross this weekend in Everett. We had a ton of fun. Thank you
very much for all of your patience and help as we worked out the bugs
in an old car. You were more than accommodating. We are already
looking forward to your event next year. It was a very well run event,
especially for having so many cars there. We were through our runs
faster than at events with half as many entrants.

Yeah my thanks as well to the University of Washington guys. I've never been to an autocross that was run as well as this one.

Even though we crashed our car (oh, the humanity!) we'll definately be back again. Thanks for the hospitality and it was great meeting you guys.

Was there any frame damage to the car? Any damage that wasn't visually obvious?

No frame damage. The car really didn't hit very hard.

2 bent wheels
3 bent a-arms
1 bent pullrod
1 warped rear hub
1 cracked sidepod
1 broken halfshaft (just the bearing cage)

Quite a list for what appeared to be a crash at about 5km/h.

James and Richard and Mike, thanks for your praise and thanks for coming down to the event. This was a great fundraiser for us, much more motivating to the team members than parking cars at football games. We are arranging some winter practice events and looking into events in the coming "season".

How are the repairs going on the UVic car? We're currently rebuilding engines and a diff /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

What did you guys crash into, and how'd it happen?

We're not 100% sure how the crash happened... it was in a straight, suddenly the car spun, did a half turn, started sliding backwards and hit the curb.

Considering it was in a straight, we don't think it's a driver mistake. The cv joint cage was broken and our first idea is that the broken part caused one wheel to lock, making the car spin. But then we don't know how that part would break without hitting anything... It's still a bit of a mystery for us /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ouch. Back in 99, we were doing an expo for accepted students day or something like that, and the brake pedal broke on the car. So the driver was going like 45 mph into a 180 turn-around with no way to stop. He hit the 10" curb full on, and it did some nasty damage to the car.

Crashes are never fun. Luckily we haven't had one since (a fire once, but no crashes).
