Topeka, Kansas. A Mod runs Tuesday and Wednesday September 9th and 10th. I've heard FSAE will be a supplemental class this year, but it's not on the schedule so we're probably running the same day as A Mod.

UTA will be there with the 03 car, and Dr. Bob in the 88 car (most likely). I hope to see you all there. Wouldn't it be something to have a larger class than A-mod in our first year?

Later,

The University of Kansas will be there with their 03 car with 1 driver for sure, possibly a tire warmer too.

Hopefully the 02 car will be repaired in time but doubtful. If it goes back toghether then there will be two more.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

I live 20 minutes from the event so if anyone needs anything or wants any local information or help give me a yell.

The University of Missouri/Rolla team is crashing/staying at my house. Anyone else need a place to crash instead of hotels let me know. We can find couches and floor space for you in Lawrence.

Ooh Ooh! Couches and Floors! That would be awesome. Can you find room for 2 or 3 UW people?

Well, looks like the FSAE class is bigger than A-Mod. It has each class listed with 12 entrants, but Scott Schmidt from KU is listed under AM, instead of FSAE. So, 13 entrants in FSAE, 11 in A-Mod. All of this according to the entry list on www.scca.org (http://www.scca.org)

UMR will be heading for Kansas in T-Minus 45 minutes....

I just faxed my registration in, so make that 14 entrants.

Congratulations to Ken Hassler for winning SCCA Nationals first ever FSAE Championship. I noticed Ken's substantial winning margin, as well as UTA's dominance. Winning not only first, second and third place, but claiming five best finishes out of the top six spots. http://www.scca.org/amateur/solo2/nationals/2003/results/groups/fsae.html

Any photos from the event? I love to see how the new car looks like.

I second that, UTA put down some amazing times, especially on the first day. I'm proud I was able to come within 1 second on the second day.

UMR, sorry to see you break so many halfshafts. Maybe those parking-lot heat-treatments could be improved http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It was great to see all the other teams there as well; Kansas State, SDSM, Texas A&M, and Akron. I hope more teams can make it out next year! The grip is amazing, about 1.5 to 1.6 g's for a non-aero car, and the courses are very fast and fun http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Plus, it's a low-pressure event where teams can get together, talk FSAE, and race just for racing. Lots of fun!

Oh yeah, and don't forget the spectacle of Jane getting the inside wheels 2 feet off the ground in UTA's '03 car! Turns out those side winds and tail winds can do nasty things when you're pulling 2 g's. UTA has in-car video they'll probably put up on their website.

Ken's combined time of 92.285 was 5.5 seconds behind the winning AM time (6.3%), and would have placed him in 5th spot, just out of the trophies.

I got pretty fast at replacing halfshafts. I think I could remove one, and have a new one in within a few minutes now.
I'm kind of glad the shafts broke, because we thought that design was ok since they had lasted for quite awhile up until that point.

We'll have about 100 pictures posted on our website within a day or so.

Thanks to Scott & Clancy Schmidt from KU and Brian Wood from South Dakota School of Mines for lending us their cars to drive after ours broke.

Watching Jane almost flip UTA's '03 car was pretty amazing. Of course, she still beat quite a few guys on the lap that she almost flipped the car.... who says girls can't drive fast?

Which one is UTA's '03 car in the photo?

There is a car 26 in the photo but no such car in the result.

Joe

UTA's '03 car is in the center of the picture.

The 26 car is UMR. I got one run in on it the first day scrubbing in some tyres before the drivetrain exploded. It is the only winged car not from UTA in the picture (the grey one).

We had a spare long shaft that got "converted" to a short shaft. The spare shaft broke several times, and recieved some MIG welding and attempted annealing with a Bernz-o-matic.

For those that were there,
what makes the A-mod cars so much faster?
Is it more engine? Because the UTA drivers are definitely on top of their game from what I saw at the UTA/SCCA autocross weekend. Just curious.

Denny Trimble

I think it's mostly a horsepower thing.

FSAE car + driver = ~650lbs, 70HP, ~9.3lbs/HP.

A-Mod car + driver = ~900lbs, 200HP, 4.5lbs/HP.

I've heard some of the A-mods are pushing 300HP now too (3.0lbs/HP). Hard to keep up with that if the course has any straights!

University of Washington Formula SAE ('98, '99, '03)

mtg

I think Michael Mahen's A-Mod has in the neighborhood of 400hp, and weighs about 1200 pounds- which puts him about 3 lbs/hp.

Ahh, an aluminum monocoque with aluminum Olds V8.

It's more than just plain hp. The top cars are pulling 2.5+ Gs in some of the faster corners. What I really like to know is what kind of lateral Gs UTA's winning car was pulling. Ken, are you willing to share some of the data for discussion purpose, or is the information "classified"? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Joe

Charlie

Sure it's horsepower http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif They trade the extra power for more downforce because they can handle all the extra drag. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Joe,

We are more than happy to share our data with you. Ken hasn't been able to make a post just yet, but we have data from our g-analyst (meaning filtered already and not peaky) sustained over 2 g's. My second day wasn't so hot and I had a number of other things going through my head before running (like the car going up on two wheels for our female driver). So my performance the second day was a little lacking.
