Anyone know where to find soft coil springs? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif We're using Risse racing shocks, cant seem to find anything less than 120 lb/in. We're looking for 50-80lb/in.

The Risse shock takes a 2" coil, similar to a Fox shox...

(I wish this forum had a search engine...we're up to 19 pages now!)

The forum DOES have a search engine. Look for the "Find" button!

We have our springs custom made but I don't know who does it for us. If you really wanna know, I can ask our suspension guy.

Pohl Springs in Washington State will custom make those springs for you. We just purchased 4 80 lb/in and 2 70 lb/in springs from them for our risse shocks. Turn-around was about 1.5 weeks order to delivery and the springs were $20 US each. They do not come coated though and be sure to spec ground ends.

what kind of motion ratios are you guys running? thoes spring rates seem really low. Verry little suspension travel too I would guess since bike shocks only have about 2 inches of travel.

older bike shocks have a 1.75-2 inch stroke, newer shocks are 2.5, you can now get some pretty burley MTB shocks with 2.75 inch strokes.

I'm not the suspension guy so I can answer what we are running, but not why. Last year we were running the same shocks, Risse Racing Jupiter's, with 225 springs all around. It was oversprung, we knew it was oversprung, and so did the judges, however we didn't have time to get lighter springs.

This year we are running the same shocks, but they are custom vavled. In the front we have a 1.2 motion ratio and 80 lb/in springs with about 2.5-3" of preload I think. The rear is a 1.25 motion ratio and we are running 70 lb/in springs. If any of this information sounds backwards it probably is though because as I really don't know a whole lot about suspension design. We also have 2 extra 80 lb/in springs in case we want to run 80's all around.

if you speak to the folks at risse, they can have springs wound for you. i've never seen mtb springs go that low however - most mountain bikes run spring rates that are much higher than what we use on our cars.

We get our custom springs from Dendoff Springs LTD. I think they are located in Canada. I am not sure if they can make 80 lb/in springs but it would be worth a call. There number us 1-800-661-4205 talk to Mark.
