View Full Version : Oill cooler on an F3
The Oil cooler assembly on an F3 is a fair bit of weight, I am considering pissing it off. We run a dry sump anyway, i could chuck a small air/oil cooler on the dry sump line. has anyone else done this??

We tried it in 2001 and it seemed to be alright, I think the motor ran cooler with the air-oil cooler, since the heat from the oil was being dissapated to the air instead of to the coolant. However we tried running some sort of inline screen filter instead of the stock filter and I would definetly reccommend against that, make sure to design in a location for the stock filter. I seem to recall a bad memory about the motor being overheated before comp, causing fine aluminum particles from the cam bearings to be circulated past the "screen" and clogging up the oil passages to the tranny bearings causing a lock up of the transmission on the practice track, followed by a frantic motor swap finishing in the skidpad line in 2001. So, moral of the story, run the stock filter and you will be fine.

Sam,
We did this with our 2001 car. I plumbed the flow from the scavenge pumps through a Tripac oil cooler then back to the engine pickup. Where the oil comes back out of the engine and into the stock oil water heat exchanger I hacked off the heat exchanger and welded a tube from the oil inlet to the outlet back to the engine. Those castings are a shite to weld so watch out. I also made up a water neck fitting to bolt onto the engine where the water usually goes into the engine after the heat exchanger. Will post a pic if I can find one.
If you want the parts and oil cooler I could probably let you have them, we won't be running dry sump again.
