I heard the Silverdome is being torn down. Anyone know where the new event is being held?
Also, the event is obviously reaching capacity and I was hearing murmurs of trying to start FSAE West. Anyone hear anything more on this? Know any good locations?

Boeing must have a good sized parking lot, although I think the main FSAE competition will still be in Detroit for many years.

Mike probably heard that from me... but it looks like the Silverdome will be around next year. There's a supercross scheduled for April 2004: http://www.silverdome.com/events.html

I heard it from several people at the 03 event that it would be the last at the Silverdome. Might have even been said at the awards? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Anyway I was under the impression it would definitely not be there another year.

I expect it will stay in or near Detroit, as it will make it so much easier to organize (they have a core of volunteers and the support of the local SCCA section, plus the big three still make it happen).

Big 2.25 maybe... This has been the main argument against an FSAE west for a while. The Los Angeles area has quite a few auto/motorcycle companies (Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Suzuki, Subaru, Yamaha, Kawasaki) that have been trying to get into the FSAE event for a while and have been and have been locked out by the Big 2.25 (ie. having to clandestinely hand you invitations to off-site recruiting functions). Im sure if someone asked they'd be willing to support something like this. Besides wouldn't be neat to actually interface with the people who actually had a hand in designing/developing the engines used in FSAE?

As far as I know all that development is done in Japan anyway, the car companies are the only ones with engineers based here.

Yes, I agree that the Japanese and Korean companies, with US divisions based mostly in the west, would support a FSAE west. I just don't think the Detroit Automakers will like that very much.

Actually both Honda and Toyota have fairly extensive R&D operations in California...AFAIK the bigger Japanese automakers all have some sort of development center in North America.

Yeah, automakers, like I said. Not the bike divisions. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I guess you gotta read the post above mine to make it clear. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well it looks like it will be at the Silverdome in 2004. My advisor emailed me and said they've released the date, same as always.

I know there are some people trying to organize a West coast event, possibly held at Irwindale Speedway near LA. This would not occur for at least 3 or 4 years though.

The posibility of a west coast event is purely based on support, but support is purely based on the instigation of a west coast event....

i.e. chicken or the egg

And to back up my man Mr. Miller (and his hand basket) there are a significant amount of Motorcycle Development Facilities in So Cal and more race shops than you can shake a stick at!!

As for venues...Irwindale would be to small for a full competition, but AWSOME facility potential if the organizers were able to land Cal Speedway (even if it was just the parking lot) for an event.

It all comes down to whether or not the So Cal FSAE teams are willing to be a part of the events we (So Cal SAE) are planning in the near future....

If we organize an event and have a good showing, that promotes interest and buy-in from industry which helps to organize bigger events, that promote further interest from industry......

you get the idea....so this is a poke at the So Cal Teams to participate...for the greater good, or just to get a head start on the rest of the competition...poke poke http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As for the possiblity of a west coast competition...anything is possible, we will keep you posted

Cheers,

Wingman
