View Full Version : Difference between go-kart and FSAE car?

What are the differences? I know the FSAE car must be slightly larger, due to the 60" wheelbase rule and the 8" wheel rule. However, I've seen a video of a shifter kart with a Suzuki GSXR600 engine shoehorned into it, and that kart looks really quick. Would it be possible to just copy the design from the kart and build it for FSAE?

Dont't forget the suspension, side impact, roll hoop, front hoops, and other saftey devices. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that you can't use shifter kart COMPONENTS (think Pedals, Master Cylinders, Seat, Steering Wheel, BRAKES, Shifter, Clutch Lever) Hint Hint....

I saw the video, it looked really fast... in a straight line. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif That's not a design really, just a big engine stuffed on a frame.

You've got to have a suspension and roll protection. Those two things alone make a FSAE car vastly different.

According to the video, weight of the kart is 130 kg. That's about 286 pounds. Most of the 4 cylinder 600 cc cars in Detroit seemed to be about 470 pounds or heavier. That's 184 pounds heavier than the kart. However, the kart didn't look like it stuck to the road much at all, so maybe the weight is necessary.

Take a look at what FSAE teams were doing in 1981, Stevens Institute of NJ looks like a kart with roll hoop and fire wall .... www.sae.org/students/fsaehistory.pdf (http://www.sae.org/students/fsaehistory.pdf)

Hey, if it looks fast (or slow), then is it???

this is taken from the united nuclear website, "Supplying the hobbyist, professional pyrotechnician, industry, and schools since 1998.". they seriously sell a kit for this car. how scary is that? see united nuclear's dangeous projects (http://unitednuclear.com/radex.htm).

you want to see the guy who made it? here is his 60mph bike: http://unitednuclear.com/jetbike.jpg

but if you think this gokart is good, have a look at this photo of someones backyard:

yes, that is a tesla coil. once more from united nuclear. have a bit of a look around the website before you try and pass it off as a prank site, its quite serious and i have actually had business dealings with them before.
