Good question Pat! I picked up this month's RaceTech with an article on Formula Student...... such a shame how there is so little talk about the winning school. There was a some nice shots and writings on a bunch of schools from FSAE though!

And, of course, we would make a big fuss of you if you were coming to Adelaide in December...All the winners in the same event.
And maybe there was some connection between who wrote most of the stuff from FSAE and who didn't attend Student because he was busy talking to a new employer about a job?
BTW, did you ever get to the bottom of that missing weight in Pontiac?

Pat,
I really really really wish we could have raised the funding for FSAE-A. We were just mentioning that it would have been nice to have all the winners in one competition!
As for the weight..... it is still a mystery. We have some guesses that Claude Rouelle suggested from past experience in F3. It seems as though during weigh in, the 10km/h wind blowing backwards on our undertray may have been helping the weight by about 30lbs.
It's my last year here...... our 04 car will definitely travel down under and do the 3 events.
Hopefully our Shootout will do well and perhaps there is hope for a Canadian event in the future??
Cheers!

Vinh !! A 10kph breeze from the rear gave you 30lbs of lift??
Ding! Ding! (Thats the bell on the other leg ringing)
And I think what Brent meant was that Cornell, Georgia Tech and Wollongong were all at Pontiac, and they indeed were the current champions from all events at that time.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?
Number of cars to score enduro points per cars entered...
Formula Student 2003
7 from 38 = 18.5%
Formula SAE 2003
31 from 126 = 24.6%
Formula SAE-A 2002
12 from 18 = 66.7%
Formula SAE-J 2003

Like I said.... I think it's still a mystery where this weight came from. Any suggestions? It's about 30lbs.
As for attrition: what seems a lil interesting is that the further 'south' you go with the competition...... the percentage increases!
Cheers!

What's the story with the wieght? 30lbs lighter at weigh-in then at what other point? I hadn't heard about it before.

We weighed in Detroit at 427lbs. Because we were a Design Semi, they re-weighed our car after the wet runs for Skid Pad, Acceleration.....and found the car at 460lbs. We accounted for about 30 of those 63lbs....but there are about 33 lbs that are still a mystery.
We were docked 10 design points for this.

Do you mean you weighed 490? 427+63=490.

Our excuse was a water pump, but I think the relative lack of quality of the track surface has a lot to do with it.
The kart track at Brunty is beautiful, it's kind of cool to race on a little circuit, for us Brits who don't have Autocross (which I think is a shame BTW). The endurance extension is the problem and has the texture of a washboard.
I am interested to see that the percentage at FSAE isn't that much higher. From the tone of responses on other threads I would have expected at least 10-20% more not 6%. It makes me feel a little better - and more determined to get a budget for FSAE 2004.
It goes without saying that the quality of the Australian event is a wakeup call to us all.

Forgive me if I am wrong about this, but I understand the FSAE-A competition has 2 endurance heats. Is the 66% a figure for teams that scored, or teams that competed successfully in both?
The only direct comparison we have is UOW, which is 50% in Detroit (still far better than the normal FSAE teams).
Hope I don't jinx us here but Auburn is 6/8 so far..

If I count correctly, 6 of 18 teams finished both enduros, still the best of the three competitions at 33%. I know its not the best comparison, as the cars went through twice as much abuse. However, for all the teams that went out of the other events for really simple fixable problems, they could have come back to finish too.

Perhaps we are talking about one thing.......and really discussing something totally irrelevant.
In my 3 years of Formula SAE.....after winning the UK event this year, I've learned that this competition is a manufacturing challenge and 'best-use-of-resources' challenge more so then say........ high performance, high tech engineering prowess. If you get your car done early, and test it, ALOT, you'll probably finish the enduro.
IN the UK, many cars came to the track never having ever turned a wheel.......including the Delft car. Doesn't that say something about manufacturing/timelines/schedules/deadlines/resources and organization?
What do others think?

very true. it seems the only way to a win is having a good, simple car, and through heaps of testing and tuning. it requires good management to enforce the deadlines and get pleanty of testing time.
but it also depends upon your definition of winning. people are still talking about WWU's v8. i wonder what future employers would consider a better experience, being on that v8 team or wollongong's team?
its a bit like choosing who you want to sleep with, angelina jolie or camron diaz... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
- if it isnt coming, you need a bigger tool.
