We talked nicely to a guy at the UK importer of Confor CF42 and he sent us enough off cuts to cover our needs. Seeing as EAR composites is a US firm it might be worth trying them direct.

For headrests, Ethafoam is a commonly used foam in other applications such as wrestling mats and outdoor equipment.

This will give you all the headrests you'll need for a few years.

good link, thanks.

how are teams mounting the head foam to the head restraint structure ?? i was thinkin of a thin aluminum plate and wrapping the foam to it in a vinyl jacket. maybe spray adhesive too ?

What do teams cover the foam with to make it look decent and waterproof?

some kind of fabric? or some special paint?

Thanks, Rob

Minimum size of ethafoam to meet area requirements (~36 sq. in. if I recall correctly) with a thickness of 1.5"

Spray adhesive mount to .100 in. Al plate.

Attach to frame however you plan to do so...

Cover with "duck cloth" (similar to canvas, but much cleaner) that can be/is embroidered. Looks really clean and fits well.

If you are nice to your mom, I bet she'd sew a nice looking cover up for ya too! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Does anyone know of a UK seller of roll hoop padding that will fit around a pipe of 25mm (1") OD. The smallest I can find is 38mm!

Cheers,
Jamie

If you are really having difficulty finding the foam for the headrest you can try finding an archery target, many of these are manufactured from ethafoam and easy to find (usually fairly cheap too)

Tried Trident at Silverstone ?

Other option is Demon Thieves, Trident should have it though.

A little off topic, but I read in the F1 tech regs that the U-shaped guard that goes around the drivers head must be made out of Confor and it calls out the specific type. I called EAR and they said that Confor couldn't be molded and that its sold in sheets. These are normally very complicated surfaces on F1 cars (like every other exterior part of the car) How do they manufacture those without doing molded foam?

Tried Trident at Silverstone but they said they only had the 38mm stuff. Also tried West Wales Rally Spares but they told me the same! Any other places I could try?

we purchased 1-5/8 inch (41mm) roll hoop padding and were able to trim it to fit 1-1/8 (28mm) tube. According to jegs it can be used down to 1". 38mm could work fine for your situation.

For those in North America, BSCI has SFI 45.1 roll bar padding that fits 1 inch OD roll bars. They also do FIA roll hoop padding and head restraint material to SFI 45.2

Their web site can be found at:
