What is used to measure the diameter of the 20.0 mm restrictor?
Starrett inside micrometer?

they have templates they shove down the restrictor - youre in trouble it it fits thru.

its your responsiility to ensure the tech inspectors can access the restrictor, also

it's a go/no-go plug gague.

Anyone now the actual size of this plug? Is it given anywhere? Our restrictor is CRP so we're slightly worried about this issue. It's designed for 19.98mm but 20µm of gel coat is quite easily polished away. If 20.000mm is allowed how do they test it? Is it 20.1mm or 20.001mm?

20.0000000 mm is OK. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
20.0000001 mm is not. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Come with a restricter <= to 20.00000000 mm and life will be good. Anything greater and you are risking a whole year. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Okay, so I assume that 20.00000001 would be okay then in your theory? As I wrote we go for slightly smaller but maybe you've heard about tolerances allready. And plug gauges and micrometers are subject to tolerancing and gauging themselves. Hey, that's an idea: How about a small light test bench. 20mm is the distance light travels in vakuum in 1.49896229*10^-10 seconds. All you night is a vacuum pump, a stop watch and a torch.

If you are worried about the tolerance being over on the restrictor, I have seen several cars go to tech, fail due to the restrictor being a hair too big, and simply coat the inside of the restrictor with a thin film of spray paint. I saw this three specific times in the past, and each time it worked and got the teams through tech in no time.

Hi Hochreiter,
The inspectors use a go/no go gauge to check compliance on the venturi size. One is an undetertmined size under 20mm the other an underermined size above 20mm. One should pass through, the other should not.
The Tech inspectors are not adversarial, they are not out to get you. Should the No/go gauge pass through the venturi, they will suggest ways of making it legal.
Usually problems are only seen on composite venturis where the dimensions may change as the resin cures. This is easily fixed with a spray of paint or a smear of resin. Machines metal venturis rarely fail.
Really, the hassels caused by making your venturi too close to the tolerance far outweigh any increase in performance gained. Give your self a few thousands safety margin.
Getting knocked out of the tech inspection line due to a dumb mistake like an undersized venturi can put you on the back foot for the whole event. You might never catch up!

They will get you for a restrictor being too small??????? It seems they would let that pass as you just hurt yourself... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

OOps, too late to edit.
Another Typo darn.
Of course I meant an 'Oversized' venturi http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
