I am having difficulty understanding the rule regarding the height of the firewall. to play it safe i was thinking of running to about mid-helmet of our tallest driver. if this necessary?? whats this 'line of sight' stipulation in 3.4.10.1 ?

"it must protect the neck of the tallest driver. it shall extent sufficiently upwards and/or rearwards such that any point less than 4in. above the bottom of the helmet of the tallest driver shall not be in direct line of sight with any part of the fuel system, the cooling system or the engine oil system."

also, how are teams mounting the firewall to the frames ?? i was considering rivets directly into the frame memebers (is it legal to poke holes in the main roll hoops?), or the possibility of welding tabs onto the frame members and using either rivets or bolts.

thnx

For the height of the firewall, it seems very subjective. I would encourage you to direct your question to the rules committe rather than risking a rules violation by taking advice from the people here who may accidentally lead you astray on an important rules question.

To fasten the firewall, we used 1" pipe hangers from a local hardware store last year. You can get ones that look nice and have rubber over them to protect your paint. Of course there are other possibilities but this one works well, makes the firewall removable, looks good, and takes very little time.

Hope this helps.

While I agree with Sam about an official interpretation, in speaking with the scrutineers at last years FSAE-A event they really don't want there to be any chance of hot &/or flammable liquids spraying onto a driver. So think about the chances of that when you think about the line of site. Remember to consider the path of fuel, oil & coolant lines for this too.

We used a structural firewall that was mounted via welded tabs then riveted and glued.
