Goodyear is pleased to announce the introduction of a new FSAE tire into our line-up. Starting in March 2009 the D2692 will be replaced by the D2696. We will continue to offer the D2691 in both a slick and carved version, while the D2696 will be available as a slick only. A limited number of D2692s will be available, but once supplies are depleted the tire will be removed from the lineup.

The D2696 uses the same construction as the D2691 and D2692, but features a new compound. The D2696 has been designed to come up to operating temperature faster than the D2692, but offers better resistance to graining when compared to the softer D2691. During our internal testing, the new compound allowed for a significant reduction in lap times.

I've heard that the new 96's are awesome. It may be hearsay, but I trust the source. Maybe some of the Rolla guys will chime in...

I've heard that this new tire has kung-fu grip.

Will these tires be in the tire test consortium thing?

Very intriguing...we are a "Hoosier team," but we do have a set of 2692s on our '07 car. They seem to have more overall grip, but take too long to warm up for autocross purposes.

Sort of a toss up between Hoosiers and Goodyears, although we're sticking with Hoosiers for now. Won't even think about switching until multiple sizes are available. Outside of that, mum's the word.

Multiple sizes as in bead diameter (10", 13") or width (6, 7, 8")? Why so in either case?

Just curious.

I would imagine width. At VIR our rear tire got a little too hot in the rear after driver change and caused some oversteer. If we could go to a wider tire in the rear, it would help keep the tires uniformly heated.

Sure it was temp that did it?

Oh, I don't want to give too much away, but I'll hint that Claude ranted about it for a good bit of time at Optimum G a couple years ago. Something about a failed Porsche strategy http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ahh good ol' Claude. Understandable though, and ideally you probably would want a front and rear split for these cars.

But-

If you tested the '96s with the same size on all corners, and if it drove consistently better and faster than a mixed set of Hoosiers of your choice (in mock autoX, or endurance, or whatever)... would you still "not consider switching" ?

Mostly I was hinting around that I would like to see them in multiple sizes. If I had the resources to do a good back-to-back comparison, I would consider switching. For that matter, we'll be keeping our eyes on the inevitable next round of TTC testing...
