Viking 35 is Alive

We got our car out today for a little drive. It was the first time, so we were gentle. We made some compromises to get it going. (We were running carbs instead of the turbo EFI engine that is still on the engine dyno.) We should be able to sort out a few things and start wailing on it in a few weeks. Thanks to the guys at the University of Washington for letting us hang out with them at their lot. Thanks to everyone who has helped us make it this far.

Right now it weighs 435 pounds wet (197kg). We still have body work to add and lots of weight to remove.

A few disclaimers before the pics:
We won't have so many zip ties in the final version.
There will be some body work.
The wiring and plumbing will get cleaned up.
The massive oil leak will get fixed.

after working on something so long, and then finally seeing it drive around is...kinda weird really...im just so used to looking at it sitting on a stand...

as far as im concerned body work just adds weight...http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll add my congrats as well, and hope to see the ol' girl in person in a couple weeks. I imagine ya'll are in good company, as CU prolly rolled their new monster out today (if they're on schedule).

Edit: Never mind that last statement, I just read the SAE 2004 thread, and CU did put wheels to ice on 1 February. Don't mind me, I'm just a little slow.

First drives are awesome, I can't wait to see our new car roll out the first time. But, that will be another month or so.

Great work guys! Looks like a quite a few team s are shooting for "frist run" dates in early Feb. Pitt's car, #69, will be making her first run this weekend. Wish you the best of luck.

We did do just that. 5am Sunday, 5 degree F icy donut. I'm trying to get a picture up, but my web server space is all sorts of pooched for some reason, and the picture kind of sucks anyway. I'm sure better ones will emerge as people catch up on their sleep.

Congrats to WWU on the run. Nice to have it done early, isn't it! Of course, would be better here if it wasn't going to snow 6-8 inches tomorrow. Freaking weather here reminds me of why I want to return to the Pacific Northwest. I can deal with 8 months of temperate rain, no problems. Oh well. Four more months. Done is certainly pushing it if the Viking 35 is anything like ours. There's at least three things I can think of that should be replaced ASAP, and we just started compiling our "sketchy list" of crap that needs to disappear. Did that formally back in 2002, and there was about 43 items on the list. And the ARG02 was the best we've done.

With respect to refinements and optimization, the road goes on forever, the party never ends.
