I just read that the competition will be moved to the north side of the Silverdome this year.

Any thoughts, comments, reasons on the matter?

i thought the lot on that side of the 'dome' as sloped? - wont that affect the dynamic events?

Same thing I recall from last year, though i didn't pay that close attention. I think it may have just been the North side lot entrance that had a hefty (in track terms) grade into it. Closer to the dome it looked like it leveled out.

The south side was slightly slanted the other way, wasn't it? Anyone remember the grade on either side?

The north parking lot seems relatively level, and probably more so than the dynamics area of the south lot (southwest corner slopes down).

The main reason I know of for the move is that there is now a permanent drive-in theater (3 screens) in the south lot.

Also remember that the north end of the lot is just that much closer to the hotels nearby so you can don't have to walk as much to crash for a few hours....

Crap. Is the coefficient of surface friction different on the north side? This could throw our entire suspension program out the window!

Maybe this will force a change in the "traditional" endurance course layout. That would be cool! And while they're at it, why not make autocross the high-speed event (no other cars to hit), and endurance the lower speed one?

I'm sure it will change the course layout, as the reason it's been similar/identical the last few years is because it was permanently marked off on the lot.

It'll definitely still fit the rulebook you can bet on that though http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It would be nice to have an autocross that resembles an SCCA autocross. If SCCA can let people thrash FSAE cars, karts, street cars, and home brewed racecars at 80 mph with a 2 minute tech inspection, why can't SAE do it with the extreme tech inspections FSAE cars have to pass? I think the SCCA's autocross safety record will back me up here.

I realize they would have to change the rules to do this, so it won't happen this year, but it would be nice in the future.

From a powertrain point of view it would be nice to finally see a track with big straights where they would let the motor strech its legs outa bit. Then again I am one of the minority that likes drag racing and going fast ina strait line.

I wonder what the response would be to having the event at TRC in Marysville, OH (Honda of America)??? Their dynamics lot is HUGE and flatter than any single square foot of the Superdome's lot. Probably would never happen due to the Big 3's involvement in FSAE, but its just a thought prevoker...

It will be interesting to see the event at the North end of the lot.

What I will miss is the bridge to view everything.

Perhaps we can convince them to get some proper tall stands for the number of people there?
