Stilletto makes an awesome rack in variable lengths. They send it to you unlubricated with the lube, so that you can strip it apart and cut it down to your exact length. Its a pretty nice setup. Stilletto is just there product name, the place is actually called woodhaven industries. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the ideas. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't overlooked some place that makes the ideal part for our application. I'll have to give Wright Place a call.

when you get the rack custom made, how do you decide upon the pressure angle, module, gear ratio, helix angle, pinion diameter, etc.?Are teams using any software for designing and drawing the pinion and rack?

You pull out your mechanisms and/or machine design book and have a nice read. You will have to start with an approximate ratio or turns to inches travel, and back out some numbers. There are standards for the rest of the stuff I'm pretty sure.

Don't have it handy, just do a google search and you should find the phone number, it was Woodhaven Industries in Illinois. You won't find a website, just a phone number and address. But it's not like a typical phone number where you call and talk to some clueless marketing type that leaves you wanting to gouge your eyes out, you'll get good phone service. It's a small shop with well-seasoned old-skool machinists. They're used to dealing with FSAE teams too.

Their racks are also top notch quality, light weight, and very reasonably priced.
