What are some opinions after winter testing round 1?

The new mclaren is nothing short of stunning... Check out the incredible packaging they've done to make an ultra narrow rear section sround the exhaust and transmission/suspension

Yeah, there's nothing but aero devices to aid flow around the wheel and suspension parts. Even the engine cowling looks like it part of the rear wing. My only concern is regarding the airflow exit for the radiators... I can't imagine where they are pushing this air considering the profile of the sidepods. I'm sure they've figured it out, but...

Also, BAR has also gone to an ultra short sidepod, although it isn't as smooth as McLaren's.

Thats quite interesting that you note that.... because I have some comparison pics from those 3 days of testing....

And to me, the 'concept car' now looks like it ran 2 different sidepod configurations...the one u'v just shown above, and one that's exactly the same as last years.

Interesting......

Today, Nelson Piquet Jr. ran in a Williams...... 3 seconds off the pace. Doesn't seem to run in the blood for that guy!

Give Jr. a chance to get used to the cars... IIRC, Kimi wasn't that quick at first during his first testing sessions. Now he's driving McLaren because he learned setup techniques and the nature of these beasts.

As for the BAR sidepods... you're right! They do look extremely similar to last year's, although the pic I posted is of their new car (at least should be considering its lack of color).

But I still can't believe what McLaren has done with their design.

testing looks mighty good,

While I will say I am a Ferrari fan (not so much an arrogant MS fan) all the way, a ti fossi if you will. testing looks good and Mclaren will be mighty competitive. however I really look forward to seeing how much of BAR's speed translates to the first race in Australia. I want to see Jenson Button do well. It is sad to see that Jaguar and Toyota look to be having some bad luck with their new cars. And how about Massa and Fisichela(spell check) in the '03 Ferrari, oh I mean '04 sauber http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. As for the Williams I think they'll be just as strong as last year.

Everyday there seems to be a new lap record broken by one of the teams. The new 04 cars must be really good or the new tyres are working excellently or a potential new sponsor is at the track and the cars haven't been weighed in. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think for the last year or so the BAR's have been quick it is just they had the wrong tyres.

I don't think much will change in the Formula 1 rankings this year maybe a team like BAR will move up a bit. I think Toyota will also go well if only for the size of their bank account.

I loved the footage of the new renault driving through the streets of silicy (spelling?) that was sick.

I'll end by saying GO MARK WEBBER!!

Where'd you see that video footage of renault through the streets? I hear that Alonso stalled it and was mobbed by fans after!

Got a link for it?

I think BAR will overtake Renault.

Some of the reasons I think BAR will be a fighter with the top 4?

They get to test a 3rd car on Friday's.

New Michelin tires.

I reckon Renault will yet again be the surprise package...great chassis, new lightweight gearbox, and tried and tested engine design from their championship winning days with Benetton and Williams.Excellent site by the way!

Yeah, and looking at the recent tests, they must have chopped off a couple cylinders and went to pushrod valve actuation http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't think McLaren will do anything this year. There testing times were awful. Renault and BAR will be surprisingly good. Ferrari will still dominate. Jaguar, Sauber, and Toyota will stay in the middle range of the grid and swap positions back and forth. And for once Minardi won't be at the back, thanks to Eddie Jordan and his horrificly managed team.
