Hi guys!

From what I've heard, many teams use Fox's shocks ( Vanilla R or VAN R ), altough they are not the best for a FSAE car.

Still, we think about using them ( This is our very first FSAE at our school). Now we can't find any dimensions about these over the internet, and we contacted FOX but got no answers.

I'm asking you guys if you have any technical drawings of these shocks. You'd be very great to share it with us!

And by the way: WOW to every team who started a car from scratch! There's just so much work http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks you very much

Forget the VAN R's. They've been discontinued for a while now.

They currently offer a standard FSAE discount on their DHX 5.0 shock. These also has low speed compression and rebound, we are using them on our car as well.

They have plenty of adjustment range, and honestly I'm surprised people still go with those Risse shocks (all I've heard are horror stories) when the Fox's are comparably priced, work great, and their customer service is fine.

I have a (very) quick and dirty solidworks model of the shock I can upload that can get you started.

Here's a speedyshare link for a zip file with the cad model. If the file expires and someone else wants the model in the future, just let me know via PM or something.

Hey Francis, my team also uses Fox Van R shocks, they're relatively cheap but unfortunatelly lack compression adjustments. If you can get a few more cash definitely go for the DHX.

Here's the link for the eye to eye and stroke dimensions: Fox (http://www.foxracingshox.com/bike/10/shocks/VAN)

Pennyman, your DHX model is a solid part. I made a model of my VAN R in solidworks and made it an assembly, so i can actually compress the shock (without the spring), and visualize the suspension work. I can do the same for your modelif you guys want, or explain how it's done.

Anyone have dyno data/ an idea of the rates?

JR :
About the rates, I've heard about Vanilla coming with differents spring rates, varying from 300 lb/in to 1200 lb/in. Don't know about the DHX, tough. Don't know about damping rates neither..

DHX comes with springs with rates ranging from 250 to 500 lb/in.

Hi,

Anybody knows how to calculate the damping coefficient of a shock absorber?

Thanks

Any vibration text should have that!

Or you could check the tech tips at OptimumG (http://www.optimumg.com)
