View Full Version : KTM Crank angle sensor

So this year we're running a 2004 KTM 450. We are also using a Performance Electronics ECU, mainly because its what we're used to and we don't have to buy another ECU. Usually these ECU's use a missing tooth wheel to measure the signals at TDC.

I just need to know if the stock sensor would be a plug and play type of thing.

If the stock cps sensor won't work, then there's no possible way i could fab up a wheel to fit anywhere inside the crank case or stator case. I would have to add components to modify the signal of the sensor to the ECU, or build a shaft that extends outside of the stator case and come up with a way to seal it. Which doesn't sound too easy...


What do you guys normally do for single cylinder engines??

This exact problem has been discussed multiple times on this forum. There are even discussions on how to fit a cam sensor for this engine I think, including pictures of the sensor installed in the valve cover.

Yes the stock "sensor" should work fine. However the standard flywheel will only have a single trigger point. You will have to modify this to use it for CPS. And yes it is possible to achieve this all inside the case as we've done it on a 2004 KTM 525 and i believe that these motors are identical in that area.

Is that right? Well i guess worst case scenario, it either wouldn't spark/inject, or we'd fry an ECU... or blow an engine.... I'll give you a call soon, Mr. Lewis http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If your crank sensor doesn't work, your engine won't start. To melt the engine, you'd need a gallon of gas and a match...Worst case is you spend some days troubleshooting why it won't start. But if Brian says it should work fine - it works. He's the man.
